Hi there,

I just finished a passage from Preveza (Greece) to Sicily. At the end of the passage we headed for Saline Ioniche, on the southern coast of Italy, to anchor and rest up before continuing to Sicily. I only have the 2006 edition of the Italian Waters Pilot, but do have the 20013/14 Mediterranean almanac, they both gave the same description of Saline Ioniche - that robberies have been reported here so only go in emergencies. Anyway, when we got there the harbour didn't exist anymore - so silted that they appear to have removed the break water and given up, it appeared to have happened years ago. This was bad news as some weather was setting in and we had to continue to Sicily.

I find it terribly disconcerting that a 2013/14 almanac can have such a huge oversight. Where can I report this?

Thanks,

Seb.

The silting occurred almost as soon as the place was built. I have a photograph of the fuel berth where the sand is about a metre higher than the quay. However, when it was realised what was happening another entrance was knocked through, overcoming all silting problems. I was last in there about five years ago, when there was about four metres depth, from memory, and many boats berthed inside. Are you saying it is now totally silted up?

Yes. We searched for the entrance that had been blasted through the West breakwater but the breakwater itself appeared to have partially dissapeared - there were only fragments of it remaining. The whole area was above ground with silt. It seemed unbelievable that the entire harbour had been abandoned, so we made a full pass of it and could find nothing resembling an entrance.

N.B. Just looked on google maps and it appears we were correct - totally silted!

Sibari and Rocella Ionica also often silt up by varying degrees over the winter months. Sibari was once not dredged until June, locking boats inside until then. Don't rely on their availability in early season. Winter silting to varying degrees is a common problem in south facing harbours on shallow sandy coasts in the Med.

Just checked Google Earth myself - remarkable. There is at least one ship, some smaller vessels and many small boats still inside.

I don't think it was ever really adopted as a port, built for an industry to the west side that never took off. Then there was a murder, which does set one's mind thinking as a visitor! When we went there the walls were too high for us to reach the bollards and we anchored in the middle.
