We're thinking of a cruise to Holland this summer, but I want to avoid the risk of not getting the weather for the passage in the time we have booked off work. So we're planning to do the North Sea passage a couple of weekends before. I'll leave the boat there for a couple of weeks and then come back on the ferry. It also means I don't have to take the kids on the North Sea crossing (at least this first time!).

Question is, where is an inexpensive place to leave the boat? I will do the same for the journey back, so it could end up being several weeks. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a reliable swinging mooring rather than an marina to keep the cost down? She's on a mooring at Pin Mill normally.

I'm aiming for Vlissingen, Middleburg, etc, may go via Oostende.

The starting point is to consider access to ferries.
Unless they have changed then there is no passenger ferry from Ostend.
This leaves the Rotterdam/Harwich ferry (or possibly flying to Southend airport from Antwerp or Rotterdam or Schipol).
So train connections will be essential. Goes, Middelburg and Vlissingen are all on the trainline so would make easy locations. So far as cost is concerned then you are stuck with marina berths and I don't recall seeing any swinging moorings. Charges includde a tourist tax which you don't pay if you are not on the boat. A few years ago I left my boat in De Werfe at Goes and he charged me 10Euros a night but he was reluctant to let me stay.
You could start by ringing the club at Vlissingen http://vvwschelde.nl/ which is just inside the lock before the first bridge. There is also a marina outside of the canals http://www.michielderuijterhaven.nl/

The harbourmaster at Middelburg might be worth a call or email http://www.wvarne.nl/

Or inside the swing bridge in Middelburg where long stay is often available

The 2 MS mentions are really busy in the summer & need through-put / revenue, so not really a place for longer stays & i seem to remember Goes has normally a 2 or 3 day stay limit as its so popular. Bergen Op Zoom or Yerseke might be another option, mainly locals with the train access too

How about Breskens? Just across the water from Vlissingen, all tide access (not so in Vlissingen), diesel, excellent supermarkets, beach, showers etc etc. Ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge and train (2hrs) or taxi (30mins) to Breskens.
PS I love Vlissingen but getting in and out are a pain and for the purpose as described.........

And while you're at it, it's a cracking trip up to Antwerp. Just take a mosquito net if you're staying in the jachtaven over the river from the city. There's a lagoon next door which breeds them like sparrows. The old pedestrian tunnel under the river is nearby and a thing of wonder too.

And a nice "walk-about" City & the City viewed from the North bank @ night is magical

PS one place Guapa suggested for a stop-over was Lillo, just below Antwerp.

Last time there we (the Other Captain and I) were out for an amble on Sunday pm when we accidentally drifted into the red light area! Rather discrete compared to Amsterdam! We did not loiter:cool:

Probably, but expensive the last time I was there.

The new outdoor marina at Vlissingen May well be a pain, but if you lock in on arrival, the old marina just off the canal is easy least. Not sure how they look on longer term stays these days, but you can always ask.

If you take the Ijmuiden option for the crossing, there's a marina with plenty of spaces before you lock in, but might be some way from the railway station - I never worked out where that is.
