We sail a 27 foot yacht , long keel 4 feet 6 inch draft.from the solent area. We are committed this year to having two weeks on the above dates. The aoption we are considering are

Channel islands, St Malo, Cherbourg Penisular

Normandy

West Country.

I know what the west country is like at that time of the year, very nice and not too crowded if you avoid some areas at the weekends. The other area I have not been to for many years. Is the channel Islands really as crowded as the discussion on Scuttlebutt suggest. How crowded does normandy get.

All opions welcome. Not experienced enough yet to venture along the North Brittany coast yet

I haven't been to Normandy for many years, and then it was mostly St Vaast and Cherbourg. But I do remember that (a) it's not too crowded considering it's August but (b) between Grandcamp and Honfleur it all looks the same. Pretty, nice food, big beaches but tidal and very, very flat.

And, IMHO, if you are confident enough to tackle the Channel Islands, what fears could Brittany hold for you?

He hasn't got time. He could be a week in Dover waiting for the weather. We were stuck with having to join mates in August in the Channel Isles 2 yrs ago and found it OK in spite of the behaviour of certain British yachts. Why do we always get these wallys alongside?

Well you dont want to come down to the West Country,,,

it is crowded, the food is bad, the locals are hostile, fuel is expensive if you can get it, there is the new Cornish cruising tax, moorings are rare, and worst off, We will be out at that time as well, which guarantees the weather will be rubbish.

Not the East Coast, you'd hate it. Bitter winds off the Urals, brown sea, tide pushing you on to mudbanks all the time, lots of lonesom open sea, not a lot of posh yacht clubs and no one to engage in inane chit chat-chat on the vhf. Not a lot of shipping and it is necessary/compulsory to anchor in lonely quiet, rivers instead of marinas.

Spread the word in Lake Solent, the East Coast is horrible! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

(do you think I scared him of, lads?)
