Where to fit my DSC radio

I have recently changed my boat, and have bought another flybridge cruiser. This has a VHF set at both helm positions, but I also have a DSC radio which I wish to fit. I am looking for advice as to whether this should go at the lower helm or on the flybridge (which I normally use unless the weather is inclement). It seems to me that, if I should suffer an engine fire I would be better off with it on the flybridge. If however it is a bad weather emergency, I would be better placed if it were to be downstairs. Grateful for your collective wisdom on the subject!

This is a bit like the great Radar debate...should I put it on the F/B or at the helm.

OK well, have two, they are really quite a bargain now at less that £150 for a cheepie.

My own personal opinion (for what it's worth), is that fire is just one of the disasters that may befall you. Most others are probably going to be weather related
or from ramming your tub into unsuspecting inanimate objects (like containers) or for attempting to take and make off with with poor fishermans expensive nets.

It's a bit difficult to operate any radio whilst mother nature is pouring the equivalent of an ice cold bucket of water over you every few seconds.

The safest place for any radio equipment is inside, in a sheltered environment.
This guards against corrosion, water damage, wind, pestilence, yellow fever, beri beri and any other problem that may stop it functioning at the moment of critical need (you have heard of the critical need circuit havent you?)
And apart from all that, you can put your feet up on the helm and relax whilst pressing the Distress Button, put on radio 2 and wait for the lifeboat in style.

If you do have to climb the radar bar as she goes down...take a handheld with you.

Put it inside..you know it makes sense.

Cheers

Steve.

I have been through exactly the same thought process and have decided to put new DSC set below and get myself new decent handheld for flybridge having drowned my cheapy at the weekend.

Overall from my experience I tend to agree with Steve

Thank you for your advice. I am sure you are correct in suggesting the lower helm. A yachtmaster friend of mine has also suggested the lower helm. There it will go.
