Wow - I never thought I would change my ideas in 24 hours! All the advice on here seems to suggest that my budget and requirements wont meet, so I should look at boat a couple of years old.

I have received a number of very detailed messages, which I have to say is all very helpful. I am still very green to all this, and really want to have a look at some options back to back. I did the boat show which was great for new boats, but some of the suggested models are now not new. I quite like the idea of a Fairline, the Sealine and maybe an older Windy (all suggestions by you guys, so seem a good place to start). Is there anywhere that would have all the used boats on display so I can get in them and have a good look around, or do I have to travel to each different sales place or marina? Like a boatshow, but not for new ones?

Hi Terry

Take a look at the web sites such as this one and a stack more from a google search and of course YBW

Visit the Marina sales as well. We looked at dozens and dozens of boats over a short period. It started as fun but does become a mission. Prepare to be shocked at the condition of some but look past the cosmetic. When you find one that appeals, walk away, go back, take pictures as you will never remember what you saw, walk away again, go back, Inspect, take someone who knows boats, take someone who thinks you are nuts to buy one and when you find one you cant resist a second longer make an offer subject to survey and trial, survey her and be there for this, get her out on the water and make sure you feel comfortable with the her. Then you make your decision :)

I hope like me you will find it to be the best decision you ever made.

Nick

As you are in Totnes I would suggest you pop down to Kingswear and go in the Ancasta office. They have quite a wide range of boats for sale. They are open 7 days a week, and no I do not have any assocation with them.
Or there are several brokers in Brixham.

I beleive www.boatquays.co.uk also hold a fair bit of stock, so probably worth a visit.

I bought Harlequin through boatquays (they had a different name then) and handled everything very well. The MD there (Ant Webb I seem to remember) was very professional and competent.

After the purchase they even sent through a boat cleaning kit totally out of the blue!

The centre of the known universe,as anybody who boats there will tell you,is around the Solent, from Poole in the west around to Chichester in the east.
There are zillions of boats in the area for sale.
Get on to the web and find say 4 boats you fancy (doubt you will squeeze any more in during a normal day) and arrange to go and look, you just want to look at the moment,so runs out can wait.
After several weekends doing this you will be "boated out", knackered and never want to look at another boat ever again.
Time then to decide what might take your fancy. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

some seemed to have had great experiences at Essex. Personally, I ve never seen so much clapped out crap in a single place before.Almost without exception the worst example of any boat I ve looked at. So I wouldnt come all the way from Devon for that. Still, others havent had that experience.
One small idea is that do have a look locally as popular models may indicate a good dealership nearby, which can help.Er, though note my PM to you on one obvious one!
Otherwise, its Poole and the Hamble. Take a w/end, and enjoy it.
Dont know if its still for sale, but there was an immaculate Scirocco at Salterns marina. Wrong engines perhaps, but a beautiful boat.Worth a look if its still there. PM me if it catches your eye,as I know the model well.

I agree, there is plenty to see here on the Dart, Torbay and Plymouth.
Once he has an idea of the particular boat type, then it is time to start trawling the internet, mags, etc.
