YYYYeeessssss,

Finished servicing the engine.
Now I am left with oily paper towels, 6 litres of old oil, 7 litres of antifreeze and old filters.
The nearest place to correctly dump used bits is over a mile away, quiet a long walk with that lot.
The nearest big marina wheeley bin is 100 meters away and gets emptied every other day.
Where would you dump the old stuff?:confused:

Doesn't the marina have an old oil container? Failing that put it in the car and go to the dump. That way, you'lll have a nice reminder to plan ahead next year what with all the oil stains

Seriously though, I would put it in a plastic storage box and take in the car :)

Live board in France, no car, only the feet....

Surely if your in France, they also follow EEc regs in disposal of stuff like that & should have an appropriate container for it, not the common gash bin.

Solids in marina bins.

Oil needs to be disposed of properly, divide in half then you have equal weight in both hands for the walk to the disposal point.

The antifreeze could go down a bog then it gets treated before it is released into the environment. I would probably miss out the bog bit because I can't get giddy about a bit of glycol but that's me. The gutter when it's raining is probably as good.

According to Nick Sawyer, the film maker, it would appear to be common practice to dump such stuff in Poole Harbour just by the Royal Motor Yacht Club and near to his £3m house so it would be a shame to disappoint him!:D:rolleyes:

"Harry" has offered to put some money in my dogs offshore account if I don't.
He has a cheap gaff round there.

If you "dump" it odds are it will find its way into some form of drainage, manmade or natural. Then it'll find its way into the sea. Then it'll end up contributing to that nasty yellow line around your waterline. Keep your boat clean (and mine). Dispose of it properly.

Ethylene glycol oxidizes first to glycolic acid and then to oxalic acid. You never know it might help to reduce that yellow stain round the water line :D

That's why I have no problems dumping 7L of 50% antifreeze into a flowing river or a tidal harbour, or Windermere. By the time it's got a couple of yards from the boat it's totally benign.

The oil needs to be disposed of properly. Pouring oil onto adsorbant material (like soil) isn't disposing of it, it's fly tipping.

Bloody irresponsible attitude IMO!

Well, I am going to take the mile or so walk with the old oil and antifreeze this morning.
The point is that putting the waste fuel containers so far away does not encourage good behaviour.
Thank you for the replies though.
