Does anyone know where I can get hold of a plug in type thermostat.

My engine bay heaters (greenhouse tubular type) are connected to mains by 13a sockets and I wish to add a thermostat.

While writing this it struck me that 13A sockets in the bay of a petrol engine may not be a good idea anyway. What does the panel think?

I've no problem with it, as mine has 2! Personally more worried about the water than the fumes.
Stats come from either TLC or most retailers do one, like Curry's, Comet or CEF.
Other option as one of mine does is to use a central heating stat and make up some leads for it.

Not a good idea at all. Better way would be to mount a remote sensing thermostat outside the Hazadous area with the sensor in the engine bay. Then you can wire the heaters through it with all the connections in a safe area. Providing the connections on the heater are sealed and the plug etc. is in the safe area there is a fairly low risk with the greenhouse type tube heaters.

Do you have heater's permenantly fitted in your engine bay? this is something i am considering what type do you use and where can you buy them?

I had a very bad experience with petrol in a fridge we were trying to cool it down. No ...Don't ask why? but the upshot of this anecdote was petrol fumes in a confined space thermostat contacts spark and up it went ....cube shaped fridge turned into a ball.

Keep it safe keep all sources of sparking /arking out of the engine bay.

Come on then why the petrol in the fridge, the mind boggles. Mind you with some of the stuff my missus produces you wouldn't be able to detect it.

we wanted to see how much the density of petrol changed at low temperature -obvious really was'nt it!

They are such low wattage, produce only backgroud heat, so I just leave 'em on all the time. Stops condensation on engine blocks.
