I've been searching for a place to buy or have made rudder bearings. I have a system where a block with the tiller sits on the upper bearing and the shaft is suspended from this. I've measured the shaft and its diameter is 31.4mm at the top and 45mm at the bottom which sitting in a 57.5 inner diameter tube. This is 1 1/4", 1 3/4" and 2 1/4" but not exactly... What is the best way to get replacement bearings? And do you really need self-centering, roller bearings on a 30 footer?

If your boat's builder is not around any more you will probably need to get something made - your choice is either a suitable engineering plastic (not nylon as it tends to swell when wet...) or phospor bronze. I have used phospor bronze and lubricated the shaft with waterproof grease. The collar has also been modified with a greasing point

Your local jobbing machine shop can probably turn one easily.
