At last i've got the shafts out and the old cutless bearings out! anyone had good experiences when purchasing them? price, service, quality etc.

I'm in Surrey and the boat is in Kent, so these areas would be good for me, does anyone know of a good supplier?

Also I have a stearn tube which extends from the hull by about 14 inches, this also holds a cutless bearing, but I think the bearing is only about 7 inches in length. I say that because I have not drawn these out yet, mainly because I cannot see what fixes them in! The stern tube is just part of the hull so is made of GRP. There appears to be NO fixing for the bearings, could these just be pressed into the tube or does someone out there know better?

Hi
Try Countrose engineering in Derby they make most of the cutless bearings on the chandlers shelves. Hav'nt got a number but if you do a search on Google you should find them.

Try ASAP they supply a very large range.

You may find thet the bearing is held in place by one or more small M6 set screws, it(they) will be burried under antifouling.

Yes I've cleaned all antifouling off right down to the GRP, no signs of a fixing at all!

The only thing I can think of is that the manufacturer has buried the fixings under the GRP! I find this difficult to believe because they must know that at some stage in the vessels life these will need to be changed! either that or there is no fixing at all, its just pressed in! trouble is I don't want to pull it out and risk damaging the GRP tube.

Regards

ASAP supplies your best bet. Bearing sometimes just interferance fit, just put in with a wooden drift. You may have more fun getting the old one out though. The beauty is they are only soft metal so a sharp cold chisel slowly used to cut a goove up it and then should drift out ok. the proper tool is a smell cold chisel with a half moon cutting face but good enginerring type should do. Be carefull you do not damage the housing.
