Just had MCA survey. Now need to buy a brass bell and more importantly two all round red lights to show when not under command at night.
Any suggestions as to how to make these up and hoist them? I assume I need a very long lead to run from the cigarette lighter socket or the battery

Alternatively, would it be acceptable to run two lights sticks up on a halyard?

Thanks

Now need to buy a brass bell ...

I thought the latest version of the IRPCS a couple of years back removed the requirement for the bell on yachts.

I guess you could argue that an emergency installation for attaching to a halyard covers it. A fixed installation on the mast has its limitations anyway as a valid scenario for requiring NUC lights is dealing with a dismasting.

Can I suggest getting two of the cheapest (16 pounds) anchor lights and putting red foil inside them? There would be lots of ways to rig these as/if needed.

Or maybe a couple of cheap anchor lights and putting a couple of replacement red LED bulbs inside them.

I have used light sticks for nav lights in an emergency and they were ok on a dark night with no traffic around, but then nothing would also have been ok in that situation!

I have a stainless tube with three flanges welded on , I use white over red over white. Top white for all round light, then red over white, fishing at night.
The plastic bulb covers are interchangable and, they all cost 10 euros each.
Just a thought.

Get hold of a couple of old bike rear lights that take a D cell & have a domed red lens. Modify for an LED rather than a bulb. Tie together with a short haliard & hoist with your flag halliard.

Will you ever actually use them? Why spend lots of money on a largely theoretical need?

Dont forget this is a coding issue. Whether you agree or not, the rule will alwys win!!

I coded a 47 ft Motor Boat a few years ago, I think all round red lights we got from Aqua Signal. As suggested, we wired them together with a suitable cig lighter socket on the end and a thin line as a hoisting halyard. Was straightforward. Never used again.

Am struggling to remember where we got the bell but its in the code, therefore...

As an example of the MCA, however, I was told to provide a radar reflector.

'Whats in one of those' says I.

'Some bits of aluminium to reflect radar signals' says the Inspector.

'We are stood on a 47 foot flybridge motor boat made of Aluminium' I pointed out.

'You need a radar reflector, its in the rules......'

We sometimes refer to it as the Mentally Challenged Agency. There is no appeal or arbitration and I could drip for hours but I won't bore you all!!!!!

Happy sailing.

NUC lights

We had the same situation during coding survey last year.
Bought two all round red lights (with hoisting arrangements), had a wire strop made to join them, bought some electrical cable and wired them up. Now stowed away until the next survey (I hope).

Cheers,

ps I do not think the bell is required- we were not asked for it.
