If I wanted a novelty wooden wheel or a fancy wooden spoked ships wheel - no problem. Instead we want an ordinary steel steering wheel, but a trawl of the usual chandlery suspects online shows that they don't sell them - anyone have an idea who stocks them?

Unlikely to be a stock item in most chandleries - steering wheels aren't exactly an everyday purchase. Vetus have some in their catalogue. Best starting point might be whoever made your steering system.

Lewmar and Goiot seem to be the most common in the UK, but I gues you'll have to find the part number on their web pages and order from a dealer. They do come up on ebay from time to time.

Lazy, I'd suggest putting a telephone call to the usual online suspects that you looked at. As pvb said, they're not a usual stock item so not usually on the webshops or directly in stock, but if you get hold of someone worth their salt on the phone they'll know where to get one for you.

Worth a look at Jefa,s website, all sizes, big range of styles, single or twin spoke, elk hide etc and quick release options. The prices are ex. Denmark but they will send one anywhere and they package them well. Their engineering and design quality is impressive as of course are the prices, but after all you do want it for a boat.
Just make sure they get your address right, mine was up and down a lot of autobahns before they found Scotland.

steel wheel

Hi I have a secondhand 36 inch diameter wheel with a straight 1" hub.
Let me know if it is suitable and you are interested.

Thanks for all the replies - I called as well as on-lined the main chandlers and because it's a rare purchase they had no stock; thanks for those extra ones I'll call them. I've been ebay searching for a while and nothing has come up - lots of wooden ones, a few very big ones. I turned down an antique brass one as the hydraulic unit I have says not to put weight on the wheel and brass is very heavy. pm sent to Brian.
