Have you been to Hull? Last time I looked at the Marina the water did not look very nice at all. You could also look at Conway in North Wales, alot of Windermere boats have gone there.
I live near Preston, but sail round Plymouth as the coast round Lancashire is crap. Troon is OK, loads to do on the west coast of Scotland. Dont know much about Hull, but where would you go??
Depends on the type of boat I suppose and what your expectations are. Pwehelli?? was ok for a while, but still limited on destinations. But thats out cos probably full.
Depending on the boat you have I would go for Conway or Liverpool. You then have a lot of choices for cruising, all the north wales coast, Isle of Man which has Douglas, Port st Mary, Peel, Ramsey and Castletown, not many facilities there but fabulous coast line, then on to Bangor NI, Dublin, etc.
Ronnie the guy to speak to at Liverpool, very helpful.
The only good thing to say about Wales-Lancashire is Ireland and Scotland arnt to far away. But theres nearly no short easy trips. Nearly every where is very tide dependant or stuck miles off shore because of mud banks. Course, as yet we dont know if the guys boat is capable, or if he's inclined for 40-60 mile trips?? In eny event I'd go for Troon. Well Larges maybe, but doubt if would get in.
Welcome Kevin,
Like most if not all the others, I'd go West as there is a greater variety of places to visit. If you could put up with a drive to the Firth of Clyde then that would be the best area of them all.
I can't recommend from personal experience, but just reading the forums for some years gives you a taste of what is available. Personally, having read many threads on the topic, would go for West coast, as cruising areas more attractive. hlb is probably best experienced of the various areas there, so take his advice

[/ QUOTE ]No, No No, the weather up here in the Clyde is terrible - always raining or foggy/misty and the scenery is some of the worst. There is either no wind or howling gales - no happy medium. On top of that there is no where to go - just out of the marina and round the bay and back in. Add to that the hostile natives - better you stay south of the border /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Don't believe all these tales you hear about the glorious scenery, hundreds of places to go even for a day trip, the friendly natives and the plethora of watering holes around the coast - many with their own moorings for visitors, all this deep water and 24/7 access to marinas and harbours and all the little secluded bays and coves- no it is all lies. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

hi there possibly-yorkshire person, although huddersfield is obviously only borderline-grim what with it's proximity to nouveau-tv Holmfirth types, the summer resort of Sowerby Bridge and of course The Motorway! which is always pronounced with an exclamation mark in yorkshire, as though it's a casino.
Fantastic position with respect to the city for some great nightlife. Fairly secure.
Good place to start a cruise to IOM and er, well, IOM
Against:
Very short locks as big tides. As a visitor they warn you might not get out at peak periods depending how busy they are.
No chandlers to speak of, not really.
Nowhere to go, the Mersey can get quite boisterous and if you cannot enter the lock you can be stuck on the river for hours without shelter. Nearest safe shelter, Hilbre Island or Preston (not a massive exaggeration).
Would think Preston or Fleetwood might suit better if you want to be on the West Coast.
where is there to go from Liverpool Marina for a weekend break or day trip, over to the Seacombe Ferry pontoon, have a look at the rock?
Maybe a trip up river to view the Jubilee Bridge or the oil terminal.
I am genuinely interested to hear this?
And yes, we could not lock out on a Mersey Festival day because the locks were full, yes we left it late but had not expected a problem, maybe I am lying.
the boat is a sealine 410 with 2 X 380 volvos
yes I know all the stuff about seakeeping etc but shmbo was impressed by all the interior room etc.
Hull marina has better locking times but nearest places are @ 75 miles plus, Liverpool has short lock time but at least some places to go.
Anyone got any views on the weather around liverpool / north wales etc.
I’m in Liverpool and have found it a good base, as already stated there is the opportunity to visit the city night life and it’s a 10 minuet walk.
Exit to the river is approx 2hrs +/- high water
Anglesey is approx 30 miles
IOM 50miles
Ireland 75miles
It’s a secure marina with good staff but suffers from a poor chandlers
