I have been toying with the idea of buying a new 37 foot steel hull and deck and having it fitted out for ocean sailing. I am sure if I go to my local boatbuilder on the Menai they would be delighted for the work, but the cost of joinery and furnishings would be prohibitive at UK rates. So I wondered if there was anywhere else with great boatbuilding skills, which would be much more cost effective than the UK? Perhaps Turkey, Greece or even the Far East? Has anyone done this or could suggest a reasonable yard they are acquainted with? Thanks.

Danang, Vietnam. But you will need some one on site to supervise.
Salaries are around $150 per month for skilled workers.

I would not rush to go abroad.

Speak to the IBTC in Lowestoft. They have commercial section but may also be interested in taking on some of the woody bits as student projects. All work is supervised.

When I was there they fitted out an Ebbtide 33.

You don't say what your budget is, but if you are considering alternatives there is an interesting 37 foot aluminium yacht for sale on yachtsnet.co.uk. Been there for over a year and the owner posts here sometimes, might be worth an offer...

The one with the red stripes!

That's the one. I personally would prefer aluminium to steel though I accept there are advantages either way for world cruising. If the one we're talking about is in good internal nick I'd say a reasonable offer might pick up a bargain, the hull certainly looks nice.
