Hello,
As boxes seem to be an unfrienldy yacht item, i.e they don't fit into the wierd spaces available. How do you store, your tools.?
Boxes, bags,?
Where.? easily at hand or out of the way under the quarterberth for example.
Custom boxes/bags, pictures.?

In the garage - where else ?

A canvas tool bag that I made when SWMBO was away and didn't know I was using her sewing machine.
It can be pushed into a locker, and can be put on deck without scratching the gel coat.

I have two bags, the sort that have a zip over top and contain many small pockets for bits. One is for wood working tools the other for mechanics tools, They are around 500mm long and about 350 wide/tall. Easy to stash in odd places. I keep mine ready available under nav seat. I also use the space for all spare parts, electrics gear in a plastic case and a pileof bits and bobs in sealed plastic bags.
I value my tools a great deal having built the boat with them and make sure that they are dry and safe. Put silica gel bags into your tools this keeps rust away as well as an annual wipe with linseed oil. The beauty of soft tool bags is that they are easy to carry on to deck and don't slide around and pack away easy.
Screwfix do a good range of tool bags, don't get the expensive ones they are just tarted up, cheapos are plenty strong enough for occasional use.

Most are in a plastic tool box under a bunk alongside the battery.

Frequently used items are in a side locker Items in there include a small adjustable spanner, a couple of small screwdrivers, a knife, a torch.

A plastic tool box with storage for odds and ends in the lid.
Small socket set in its own plastic case.
Both fit in any of the under seat lockers.

In the lowest step of the companionway, which forms a locker about the size of a toolbox.

Similar position but behind the steps in a wooden box, again the size of a normal tool box. I would suggest that the wood is not suitable and plastic is better. I have a feeling that the wood retains additional dampness than just that found in the air.

Er in the cabin converted to a workshop with a bench, vice and grinder, doesn't eveýone have one of these!

Good grief, no! The paid hands do all that, I would never sully my yacht with a "workshop".

Thanks guys,
I like the rolled up canvas idea, that way you would know if one was missing at a glance.
I don't have a companionway, I do have some voids around the new cooker installation, maybe possible to make a drawer of some kind.

thx
Howard

i tend to leave mine in the aft workshop, next to the "box" of **** i store there it's a struggle but when it gets too full i just push it all under the work bench which is next to the lathe i use sometimes :-)
