Where have VHF channels 29 to 59 gone ?

I knew that at first were introduced channels 1-28 with a 50kHz spacing and 4.6Mhz spacing for duplex frequencies, and after a first period they saw that a 25kHz spacing between channels would work and introduced the others from 60 to 88

Have channels 29 to 59 ever existed ? For what reason the second group of channels was numbered from 60 upwards and not 29, 30, .. ?

The channel numbers between 29 and 59 all have allocated frequencies. See: http://www.radio-scanning.co.uk/marine_band.html
These private channels are mostly allocated on a local basis to commercial organisations such as Gosport Ferry and Portsmouth Ferry Port. I think even Sunsail might have a private channel allocated.

On the subject of private channels, I have come accoss a number of sets (including an Entel HH and a Raymarine fixed) where Channels 87 and 88 have been programmed at simplex using the lower (A) frequency.

As the higher (B) frequency for these channels has now been assigned to AIS there is no way that Ch 87 and 88 can now be used for duplex voice, so having a pair of radios with these set to simplex effectively gives you a private channel.

Generally radios are not a user programmable thing any more, you will probably need to speak to the local dealer for your particular set. Also, you will need specific authorisation for the channelsyou want, usually in the form of a letter from your sailing club etc. Your dealer should not program channels without authorisation, but at the end of the day it is you who are responsible to ensure you have authorisation, Mr Ofcom is starting to clamp down on illegal usage!

Regarding Sunsail I was asked to skipper one a while back. The instructions included the requirement to make a test call to Solent CG on every trip! I love leaving the Solent and getting away from redundant radio checks.
