My old boat had a tiller that took up much less room.......you could helm with four people sat in comfort with the helmsman at the back either to windward or leeward as appropriate

First experience of a Trapper 500 is that the tiller takes up most of the cockpit......any suggestions? Anyone use a tiller extension?

Yes, you can use a tiller extension, or the helmsman can sit right at the front of the cockpit. The best place for the crew is then behind the helm, so he can winch easily.

The helm is a bit of a cockpit sweeper, but they're nice boats to sail.

I often sailed alone and used to steer mine from the front of the cockpit. If I had a crew they would be behind me. Expect to get wet as they are a bit dirty to windward in a sea! Because of the rake of the rudder stock you need to keep the tiller flat as otherwise they can get heavy because as you lift the tiller the leverage reduces. Great boats - built mine from a kit and kept it for 10 years.
