Where does battery monitor shunt go on this battery bank?

I have a victron 712 battery monitor to install when I'm next at the boat but I'm not sure if the shunt should go on the negative with red arrow which goes off to all 12v devices or the other negative (orange arrow) that comes from the charger?

I'm sure it will be clearer once I'm back at the boat..

Neither. You'll need to rewire slightly, so that the shunt measures all the current going in to or leaving the battery bank. One solution would be to disconnect the two wires which you've marked with red and orange arrows, and connect them to the load side of the shunt. Take a new wire from the negative terminal of the left-hand battery and connect that to the battery side of the shunt.

I'm assuming that you've correctly identified the wires. The routing of the positive cables is a little confusing.

Thanks. Yes, it does seem rather odd but this how the factory did it ? I'll trace the positives when next at the boat
 
I think I get this. The shunt off the fused positive will be to indicate the charging current from the charger. This is not the shunt you are talking about.

The shunt for the battery monitor should be inserted between the point of lowest potential (would be a negative bus bar if one was installed) and the connection to all other devices. The horizontal black conductor below the middle of the three negative terminals looks good to me.

Am I right in saying that if the fuse blows, the rest of the boat could still be powered by the charger? Now that strikes me as weird.

Edit: Probably won't make a blind bit of difference for a compact installation as this, but it is good practice to connect the positive and negative from the charging source diagonally opposite across the bank, i.e. top right (positive), bottom left (negative). The OP's are at one end only.

Not just the charging source; the main connections. The OP's are actually at both ends! The load is connected at the bottom left, the charger is connected at the bottom right, if the OP's cable identification is correct.

The positive wiring goes right hand battery positive >>> fuse >>> positive shunt >>> loads (and presumably charging sources, as they don't appear in the picture). There is likely to an ammeter or old battery monitor somewhere.

OP, i'd check where the two small cables go and if it's to something redundant, remove the shunt and just connect the two thick red wires to the fuse.

Thanks. Boat was brand new in March last year so I don't think there will be anything redundant as I spec'd it all. I'll have a proper investigate when I'm back on the boat end of this month ?
