Where do Journalists learn their English

Tim, you should know by now that no man is a hero to his successor.
I don't want (or expect) to be a hero. But I wonder whether the fact that I use what I regard as correct terminology, grammar, and spelling now marks me out as a dinosaur to those who will be stroppy old freelances themselves, in twenty years time.
I hope I've understood your post.
I fear you may not have done!
Warps or lines is largely personal preference
Rhumb line is a technical term with a precise meaning: to use it to mean something that is almost the exact opposite is just plain wrong.
Port and starboard is sometimes almost essential and sometimes completely pointless, and I happen to agree with you. You wouldn't say "turn near-side" just because you're in a car, so why insist on "turn to port" when you're in a boat?
