Now ordering my FM200 and wondered whether it can be fixed to a bulkhead or does it have to be mounted centrally between the two big green metal things?

Info is very sketchy on all this stuff.....

Thanks

Nick

Mount it centrally on a spar above the 2 noisy things. Don't worry, the heat shouldn't set it off, the vial is set to burst at about 80C. You need even distribution over the engine bay area.

Hi Nick - My self exploding extinguisher is right between two Volvo lumps and is no further than a foot away from either. It gets hot & stuffy in the engine bay - but not too hot. You need to make sure that it can't fall off accidentally and doesn't get knocked accidentally. The cradle that holds my extiguisher on is also tied to the extinguisher by nylon rope, which I fitted. I was (am) paranoid about vibration or slamming in rough water, dislodging it and sending smashing down into the bilge.

Interestingly I have just spoken to Richard at Blue Marble who said that it does not really matter where the thing is mounted so long as the head is as high as possible. He said that it can be bulkhead mounted too.

I have no connection with the guy at all and I have to say that he is very helpful.

empirical evidence

I dunno anything technical but in our new boat the FM200 cylinder is mounted on aft bulkead of engine room, to one side. In other words, in a corner, about 15 feet from the opposite corner. I assume this is all checked out by experts and considered ok. Which implies you can put it anywhere.

Another issue is whether your engine room beocmes near airtight when the cyl goes off. Eg, are the engine intake fans wired to turn off automatically? Are there any other vents without closures? Otherwise the FM200 gas can be lost to the outside while the fire burns

I had this query when I replaced a horizontal halon for a new vertical thing. The advice I was given from manufacturer is that it will fill the engine room easily from anywhere inside it. So its bolted to one side, since a post between the big green lumps would have got in the way and I could see the extinguisher being knocked about.

have you bought yours, they had some on ebay last month and were going cheap, I thought it all looked a little dodgey but managed to bid for one (FG225a) for £130 and decided it was worth the risk, came 2 days later, complete boxed with all documentation

I've put mine on the engine bay ceiling between the engines - but in the region of the fuel filter end - not the exhaust manifold/turbo end. I checked a few installations at the boat show to guide me.

the one I bought covers far more than I suposedly need well according to the tables the manufacturer gives. Mine is a Sealine 285 with a volume of 165 cu feet, the extinguisher does well over 200.

I've seen one advert for these extinguishers offering different sizes according to the cubic volume of the engine compartment but it stipulates that only one extinguisher should be fitted. What do you do if your engine room is bigger than the largest capacity extinguisher? Ours is about 6 cubic metres.

We fitted two to our boat, one above the batteries, charger and eletrics and one in the engine room.

We were told the should be mounted at an angle, so we built our own mounts.

The wihte thing is the strut that goes betwixt the engines as we felt that was the best place to put them.

Have a look.

I'm still confused............

Blue Marble man said that it doesnt really matter where the thing goes so long as it is reasonably high up and that was really it.........

Will badger him again

It's the wrong way up on your "white thing" IMHO, the bowl that shatters and releases the extinguisher, should be facing downwards, (like in your Battery pic).
Thats if your fitting an auto ext. in that place.
Dave.
