Hi

I need some soft eyes spliced on to some 6mm braid on braid.
Does anyone know where I can get this done close to Maldon / Bradwell / Burnham - or better still... can anyone teach me how to do it? (I would of course pay for your time).

The rope is off the boat, so it can be done in the warm!!!

Thanks in advance

Ian

Teach yourself!! I did some last year from an instruction video I found on the web. Didn't even have the proper tools - just used a skewer, an awl, loads of perseverence and a few swear words. Well pleased with the results though.:)

One Stop chandlery in Maldon has done v good work for me in the past - haven't been in for a while though but I think they're still there...

Only a few swear words Lisa ?

I'll upload a YouTube video to teach you how to swear properly :)

I followed the methods on this site :

I can do chain splices and soft eyes in 3 strand nylon off the top of my head, but still need to refer to the instructions for braid over braid.

Perhaps you are like me. Learned how to do it, and don't enjoy it.
Give Dave who owns DRS rigging in Southminster a call. 07796032564. He has done all my rigging including all the mods when I bought it new.

splicing... oh what fun!!

Thanks for all the replies....

I bought some fids today from one stop in maldon.
Sat down in front of the telly with the rope and spliced away!! or rather that was the intention!!
Are 3 hours I have given up on the first splice. I got 90% of the way there but just could not milk the outer down to form the eye.
It all seems to get very tight around the bridge.
Anyway - glass of wine poured now.... so we carry on to see if I can crack it!
and oh yes.... if you wish to expand your vocabulary, then splicing is the hobby for you!!!! Grrrrrrrrr!!!

I found a pair of gloves a good idea at the "milking" stage. Took a time or three to get it right, but along the way i discovered lots of new ways to use multiple swear words in a single breath :)

Like you I decided that splicing was not my forte. Cockpit Marine in the High Street Burnham have a rigger who can splice thimbles and eyes into rope at modest prices. They did me a new halyard and its a great job.
