Following our recent successful trip to Lechlade, we are now planning a trip towards Henley. I think from our records and recent calculations, that we can carry enough petrol for this return trip, it would be great to know the location and suitable moorings for us to top up as and if required.
I note there is a petrol station close to Benson, so that might help supplement our fuel stocks on our return. I also can see a petrol station not far from Reading / Caversham. One close to Henley would be a great benefit too, if available.
I have located a couple of riverside petrol stations, I need to phone them to check availability, but more importantly how old the fuel is. When we were on the Broads, there were a few petrol outlets, but as well as high fuel prices, (fair enough, they have a business to run), you were getting petrol that could be 1-2 years old. I use the Starbrite fuel additive in such cases, and my Honda outboard doesn't seem to complain. I also blend old fuel with new which also helps.
We find cruising new territory quite exciting, certainly we will be returning north of Oxford very soon too.
Thank you in anticipation for advising locations of petrol stations. Very much appreciated.
Best regards,
Richard

Hi Richard

Reading has the fuel garage by Caversham Bridge you mentioned and a little further down is a large Tesco with fuel. Moorings are in theory available for shoppers. It is a lovely section of the river. Enjoy.

Hobbs of Henley have two fuel pumps - one of which I suspect is for petrol, as many of their Chentlemanly customers have petrol launches... Prices will be in line with that statement...
Hobbs are 2-300m upstream of the bridge on the starboard side - going up. Well signposted - but can be obscured by there huge launches...

Hi Richard,

It can be difficult to moor close to the petrol station near Benson. Two petrol stations I use between Abingdon and Henley are in Wallingford and Pangbourne. Walk to the town in Wallingford and carry straight on past Waitrose and the petrol station is on the right. In Pangbourne the petrol station is a few hundred yards up the Reading road. Both are busy filling stations so the petrol is fresh.

Derry

Two very quick responses, which appear to tick the boxes already.
I thank you both so much, and the forum in general, as I have been very pleased with the replies I have had so far to all my posts. Many thanks.
Best regards,
Richard

Caversham Bridge there are petrol stations a short walk either side and of course there is always Tescos if you can find space to moor.

Thanks Chris, it looks like we can get the trip to Henley and beyond sorted. Having full tanks at Henley means that another time we could look at the lower non tidal Thames towards Teddington.
But for that bit, might have to save up to pay for mooring fees lol...
Thanks again,
Richard

Dunno if that was a joke for Chris, but after Henley and moving nearer to London, filling stations get closer and closer together . Maidenhead, Staines for starters.
Plenty of free moorings - though they may be occupied by....

Hi TrueBlue, certainly not meant to be a joke, lol, but I have done some groundwork re fuel moorings etc up to Henley, as this I think is as far as we could do on our first trip. I have not looked in detail on the lower non tidal Thames, but maybe re mooring fees I was maybe looking at moorings on the tidal Thames, which, although not beyond my experience, would require additional planning, and maybe a narrow beam Viking 23 is not best suited to potentially large bow waves. Although we have crossed Breydon Water (Norfolk) in a force 6.
