If I was to plan sailing down the West Coast of France with the intention of entering the river/canal system at the Garonne, its would cost a small fortune in charts - Imray North Biscay pilot suggests you need about 25 charts - at £12ish a go thats a lot of dosh.

Anyone got any suggestions:

Is there such a thing as a "2nd hand" chart supplier - with charts marked up to date?
Is there a website for chart swapping?

Thanks in advance

It is all a question of how much risk you are willing to accept.

On a few passages to Gib and beyond, I have managed with with a selection of medium to large scale charts (depending on the coast line hazard level). I have then used pilot books as a substitute for the smaller scale charts.

Difficult subject as many are afraid to infringe copyright etc. Chart swapping is not allowed - but happens.

I have found a way to 'grab' charts of CD's that I use in Ozi-Explorer etc. but its questionable ethics. Also you would not be legal as far as French etc. authorities are for Charts carried on board.

Come on down to the new e-group that I set up .... based on GPS .... many people use PC based nav with their GPS and we should be able to sort out a database of set-ups etc. Its a new group so needs members, but once the numbers grow - it should get very interesting.
