Searching on line has not found me anything longer than 12 cm...

It is for supporting the mizzen mast step on the drascombe lugger I am rebuilding very slowly!

Do you really need it fully threaded or would a length of stainless steel bar threaded on each end be more suitable?

At first I thought this bolt was to run through a hole in the mast itself - we had exactly that arrangement on Kindred Spirit. That being the case, I too was going to suggest cutting a thread only in the end(s) of a length of bar. The idea of varnished timber sitting on a series of pointy edges rather than a smooth bar, didn't seem right to me. But then I thought that 6" seemed a bit stout for a Drascombe mizzen, and he did say supporting the step, not the mast, so I decided it must be being used differently and maybe threaded the whole length wasn't a problem.

If you want a smooth shank then it is not impossible to put a thread onto 6mm rod. Get a die nut of suitable size and thread. You might need to file a taper to get it started and use lots of lubricant , go slowly. As said a nut on each end. good luck olewill

Have you tried ringing Pirates Cave in Rochester? They have bins of loose nuts and bolts etc and may well have the size you need. They are open on Sundays until 1330.

If you can survive without the thread all the way along, A2 stainless will do you an M6 x 150mm socket capscrew for £1.80. http://www.a2stainless.co.uk/M6-x-150-Socket-Capscrew-DIN-912-A2_AT9IQ.aspx

Apropos Die Nuts - would these be any use on stainless rod? Carbon steel it says in product description.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-79198-5-Piece-Metric-Hexagon/dp/B000PJBZTG#productDetails

" Box Contains
5 x Metric hexagon die nuts, sizes: 6 x 10, 8 x 1.25, 10 x 1.5, 11 x 1.5 and 12 x 1.75 mm "

That "10" changes to "1.0" elsewhere in the details, and is , I presume thread pitch. So, is that standard? If you buy M6 nuts will they fit?

Thanks for posting that very useful link. And who knew there was a British Standard Cycle thread ?! (Screw thread that is - not Forum thread)

A2 Stainless (aka Stig's Fasteners) are great for odd threads, though alas their stock of Whitworth is decreasing. They are also nice people to deal with and will cheerfully do small and/or mixed orders.

If I was doing the job in hand, I would use threaded bar, dome nuts on the exterior, standard hex inside and penny washers, just a suggestion.
