I can get sight reduction tables from the US govenment as pdf. I know I can get software that in effect replaces an ephemeris but I want the real thing. Anyone know of a download site?

"Put 'nautical almanac' into google and you have the choice of many.... "

Well, actually, not. There are books to buy, and online services to use (when one is online...) but nothing to download and print and take to sea. Not that I have found, anyway.

Thanks Mickhael_w. I am familiar with pangolin, like you for other things, but never thought about him for this.
I hope I didn't give the impression that I am mean. I am, but I don't want to give that impression.

"but nothing to download and print and take to sea." for nothing...perhaps you should have added !!!
Sorry I had not realised that you were not prepared to pay for anything.
If you are willing to pay there are loads out there.
Please ignore my previous post.

Why would anyone pay more than they need? The UKHO/US Almanac is about 30GBP/year. It looks like the pangolin one is about 40AUD until I die.

The US govenment take the view over publications that, since public money went into their production they should be avalaible at cost. Now that the Internet makes (almost) zero cost delivery possible they have, quite logically, made many publication including the sight reduction tables avaliable free. I suspect that it only that the ephemeris is a joint undertaking with UKHO that it is not also avaiable free.

Try this :

http://www.tecepe.com.br/scripts/AlmanacPagesISAPI.isa

It will only give you 3 days at a time but you could print them off.
BTW a cheaper ( hardcopy) N A is the american commercial one - cost £17.50 at LIBS last year , I will buy another this year I hope - better than the near £30 that the Admiralty charge - I agree with you - a large rip off.
ICE used to be free from the USA online - its a DOS based almanac - now defunct - they do another called MICA now but this is charged for . The Yanks are learning !!

download an ephemeris?-have these been corrected for the extra second?

Clocks are adding one second tonight, to adjust for Earth rotational speed slowing down.
So, if no account has been taken in Nautical Almanacs, could mean your position is 506.34 yards out? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
