Hi All

Does anyone have any experience of doing 5-day YM 'brush up' courses, and also can recommend a good provider?

Ideally someone based in Essex rivers as I know that area well.

Thanks one and all /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Did mine with Hamble Sailing School.

Very good prep, nice boat (Dufour 36) and they got me through !

So happy to recommend them

Southern Sailing, in the Solent, excellent instruction, night on a mooring in the upper container terminal. pints on IoW, passed the YM, good deal. Boats a bit tired but didn't care because instructor Ray was so very very good.

I did my Exam in the Solent which I dont know very well.I think it may be better to do it in a different area ,stop you being too casual.

Eg on the exam the examiner wanted me to enter a particular place at night Low spring tide.I worked it out and it was possible but only just.I went back to the examiner and said it was possible but as I had never been there and it was on a leeshore at night with very little margin for error normally I wouldnt do it. He answered "excellent decision, take us somewhere else then".

If I had been overconfident and piled us onto the putty for an hour when we all needed some food and a pint I think the outcome could have been different.

I used to sail quite a lot in the Solent, but I did my 5 day YM preparation course and exam with Conwy School of Yachting in North Wales.
This was partially because two friends were doing theirs with Conwy, and also (like Graham) I wanted to do it somewhere different, somewhere I had never been sailing before.

And it was much more fun than going to old haunts again in the Solent!
AND they got me through, on a very nice Victoria 34.

I must admit to being a wee bit worried through, when asked to take the boat through part of the Menai Straits at night during 'my' exam, especially as we had not been through there at night during the preceding 5 days, but I managed somehow.
