Does anyone know where I can buy one of the flat mesh stove top toasters in the UK please?

I can only find the big triangular box shaped ones at the moment and I cant store one of those very easily.

Thanks in advance.:)

The Gelert type is not very good. The fine mesh tends to concentrate the heat so you get uneven toast and they don't last very long as the mesh burns and breaks away.

You can also get pyramid types which fold, but none of them are really effective.

I bought one in a camping shop in Tenby years ago. It looks the same as the Gelert one but don't remember the make. Has lasted well and works better than an electric toaster IMO (but I like a crisp outside on my toast with a soft centre, so a fast blast of heat from the gas does this well).

What about the idea of having a stainless steel plate to put over the hobs to toast bread like a hotplate, anyone tried this ?

Blacks/ Milletts sell a flat one which has a folding handle and two plates of steel crimped firmly together with a 1cm air gap, lower one with larger holes, top one with many small holes.
works fairly well on gas ring, but rusts eventually-2/3 seasons with us.

Cotswold Camping and other 'good' camping shops may have it too.

The frying pan method works too, do first, wrap in clean tea towels to keep warm, do rest of meal.

I made my own in stainless but spot welded stainless steel wire grid to the plate. It works very well and should outlast me.

We bought a collapsible one with a flat steel plate with holes in and four sections that make a pyramid on top of the plate. I think we got it at Lidl for a few pounds but I can't remember now - it wasn't from a yacht chandlers.

It toasts 4 pieces at a time and works pretty well althought it's not very quick.

We have been using one for the last 8 years on a Origo cooker and it works fine. Full heat for half a minute, then turn it down to about half and start toasting. It won't toast the whole side in one go - the bread needs to be shifted along a bit, but that's not a problem if you like toast. The mesh is still intact. We tried one of those metal pyramid things - it was a complete waste of space and money.

30 years ago Gelert was a respected name where you could buy quality kit at reasonable prices. The build up of the company seems to have resulted in low to medium quality goods selling at premium prices. My opinion. I've known the company from practically start up.
