When two radars are better than One?

I know that many long distance boats have two radars - my new marlow will but apart from obvious value as a backup - is there any other advantage I am not aware of. For example does it allow to screens to ve devoted to a radar each with the short range on one and longer range on the other? How do bigger boats use multiple radar?

Normally as two seperate systems, with one set for short range and the other for long.

It's not just a simple matter of range though, different beam widths are utillised depending on the detail required, I also believe that different pulse rates are used to give a more detailed picture.

Yep - same here - the radar at the helm is kept on 1/2 mile range (usually) and fine tuned to pick up the pot dahns, etc.

Second is networked and over laid onto the plotter as well as having its own display and also can be viewed on the chart table PC with limited controls.

The whole system is Simrad.

Re: Two arches - after Friday

Yes I have.
I had the platinium UK version on Ocean Deep but found that besides it not working at all half the time due to water entering the waterproof unit on the flybridge it was pretty useless.
This time I am going fore the USA made system with a longer range.

From what I have learnt on this thread I will tune in one radar for really short range stuff and the other for longer range. I am not sure if the Raymarine equipment will allow me to display both on the hsb2 bus but will find out from Raymarine.

The spec on the new boat will be pretty amazing - it will even have a remote controlled underwater video robot thing that I can do underwater exploration with but without getting wet - that will be part of the video stuff I will be doing in exploring the coast.

I have decided to sell my Avon jetrib and go for the 17 foot Marlow boat that is a kevlar/glass boat with a big outboard and can tow toys etc as well as being big enough to go exploring and have a picnic in etc As this is heavy, I am also figuring out a system to store my inflated Zodiac with its 4 hp engine that all weighs less 50kg and has wheels to pull up a beach - that would be the tender.

I am enjoying researching all aspects of the boat. The boat although 77 feet LOA will be able to dry out so that I can always do some work like changing anodes etc.
It would make some sight going on a beach and letting the tide go out. It does that without legs - just rests on its two skegs.

I will be using the boat mainly in slow cruise sun 10 knot mode with a range of over 4000 Nm ..... so its a case of popping to the CI and having a tanker full her up.

Re: Two arches - after Friday

Friday 11 AM, set off from Whitehills, a nice place on the Morray Firth coastline, forecast was for a gentle F3 SW.... turned out to become SE, F4-5, gusting more. We rounded a headland, which is well known for poor sea conditions, so had timed this to be on slack tide, and went 2.5 NM out, into 40M+ of water, to avoid the worst of the seas. All of a sudden, we encountered a set of much larger waves and we took green water over the bow which ripped off the sun-lounging cushions off the front deck (these are in a resessed area, and have withstood much worse conditions than this). Cushions then flew up and must have wedged them self across the A frame, presenting a nice wall for the wind, spray and water to slam against. Effectively making a nice wall, where little could pass. Another couple of waves like that and we heard a big crash and our flagstaff came down onto our aft deck, rapidly followed by the aerial and navlight pod and the Radar, and the cushions flying off behind us (radar was shut down straight away). Visual inspection saw the radar arch in the location of the picture and we quickly (a bit action filled) secured ropes around the radar and the pod to prevent further damage to the boat, with knife on hand to cut, if the arch should decide to go overboard. Then we took a slow approach to our destination port, which was only 30 min away. At no time during the journey did we have any hard slamming, or uncomfortable jarring of the hull. Later inspection revealed that the hardwood 2x4's laminated into the flybridge deck have split along the same lines as the bolts that held the arch onto the deck. Now I need to find a way to replace the arch and improve the fixings, and a single mast may become my preference, as nothing can be wedged on it.... all I need is someone to come up with a cost estimate which I can present to my insurance company..... or a pre-fabricated mast in alloy or GRP to replace the arch and seperate flybridge seating.... or get rid of the stuff on top completely and place the radar and the other stuff on the coachroof in front of the flybridge...

A friend has 2 radars, chartplotter and fishfinder all linked on HSB2. He is away at the moment, but from what I remember only one radar goes out on the bus.
I know we had a lot of "fun" getting it all working in the most optimum configuration!

That is some story and I am sorry to hear about it.
At least nobody was hurt!
You head out in a forecast f3 and have your radar arch removed!!!! Juat shows how much we have to respect that sea out there.
I was struggling to understand how the arch could offer the resistance to be knocked down but never though of the sunbathing cushions!
Best of lucj with gettijg her quickly fixed
