When things go wrong in Paradise.

Must have been awful, we all have hairy moments but (luckily) I've yet to experience that although blowing the spinnaker out half way to St. Lucia and gift wrapping boat at stupid o'clock then the boom snapping was not good.. Arc "race" + muppet skipper, long story!
Would not read that before embarking on a longish sail (unless perhaps needing to when in that part of the world), for me that would be akin to taking a dip mid Atlantic when becalmed (as other crew members did) whilst listening to the sound track from Jaws :)

I remember sailing from Bonaire to the Caribbean island chain after 36 hours the wind, waves and swell picked up, we also headed by a two knot current. All I can is that sailing backwards is interesting we crossed 68 degrees west three times and eventually put into Puerto Rico we had had enough.

I'm glad we're not alone. Sailing backwards is at the least frustrating. Sounds like you found a nice contingency port though.
