Eileen and I popped over to the Upper Thames Motor Yacht Club this evening, nothing special on, just a few of us pushing a few tables together and having a monster 'take-away'
On one of the tables I espied a huge pile of hard-hats all with a transfer of the club burgee. On enquiring about these I was told they had been bought for members to use when working on or around their boats. It seems it is a new rule that you have to wear one when doing anything around the club. Tell you this, I bet they're uncomfortable to wear when making love.

Dunno, the wife keeps asking me to bring mine home, along with coveralls & boots and gives me a knowing smile at the time of asking. I reckon she just wants me to fix the roof or repoint the cottage chimney or some such.

Yeh! But we have to wear full body condoms when flying out here! Mind you, you definitely couldn't catch anything in one of those!

Now I have to wear a hard hat on building sites for obvious reasons what with falling bricks etc
but I could never figure out why you see guys with hard hats working outside
often in a field or next to a motorway, I mean whats gonna fall on yer head a dead bird maybe

So whats gonna fall on yer head when your working on your boat on the water,
dead seagull maybe

I miss the old aluminium Macdonald helmets that were made illegal in the seventies. The works of art that were engraved onto them were a sight to behold, most of it done during working hours too when they weren't making stainless and brass bracelets and belt buckles.

Memories, memories ...

Forbsie, most of the mac "T" helmets, were engraved in Iran, after being first filled with pitch, they were engraved with a hammer and small punch, mine was anyway, still got it, (somewhere) illegal to wear of course now. The northsea variety are pathetic compared to the old Iranian ones. Yes, memories!!

The gas board have rented part of a field off me. Two inspectors came to talk to me but we could not go into field cos they'd forgot to bring hats. You have to wear a hard hat to go into the field!!

Regulations! We have to wear hardhats all the time, even in enclosed roofed places on the rig floor, because it's outside the office area and designated a hard hat area, bloody ridiculous, but takes an act of god to change it.

Yeh! but Haydn they know your reputation for throwing stones. Seriously though, there's always the posibility that whilst in the field a Meteorite, Nay! even at Asteroid might hit them, better safe than sorry.

Had a mate once who, whilst we were working in Libya, had a testing manifold crush his finger when trapped underneath, around 3 cwt, and the first thing the company asked was, 'was he wearing his gloves at the time of the incident?' (Gloves were cotton polka-dots) Go figure.

It would be interesting to find out what has prompted the Club to introduce this rule.

One possibility may be the tendency in the UK to follow US approach when it comes to suing for increasingly minor 'accidents/incidents'. Maybe the club needs to provide hard hats to keep its insurance costs down. It is a bit concerning where this approach may end up. All IMHO.

Classic! Abolute bloody classic! Like a hard hat is going to stop a joint of drill pipe crushing your head! Even a bolt falling out of the derrick has the effect of about 1/2 ton by the time it hits your head! Even birdshit hurts from that height!

C\'mon Byron!

You don't think it may have been something to do with 20 odd boats, average 5 tons each, that were flying through the air on the Saturday, suspended by a 10 times bankrupted Terranova crane, whose cradle had been secured by a band of well meaning geriatric amateur yachties, all issuing orders at the same time to a crane driver who doesn't speak english anyway?????!!!!!!!

This was "crane out" day at UTMYC, and you wouldn't have caught me without a hard hat with that lot at large!

Re: C\'mon Byron!

You reckon as hard hats' going to stop 5 tons, bloody thick hard hat! They also dont stop sideways strikes either. Might stop you hurting your head when you bump into things, I've been wearing one for 26 years in the oilfield, I am fairly well aware of what they will protect you from and it's not a lot.
