...I thought like a child and, for that matter, fought like a child.

Now I am a man --- it would be reasonable to ask if you could debate as such, rather than lapse back into childish ways.

Not aiming this at anyone in particular, just noticed that some people seem unable to try and force their point on others without it getting personal. Ultimately I have no patience for that here. The debate can be as fierce as you like on Scuttlebutt but please, please keep the personal out of it. If you don't, ultimately you will not be welcome here. Simple really.

It would be an extremely sad day if everyone who took to the water (or anywhere else for that matter) was a clone of the next man or woman. So express your view, disagree with everyone if that's what that means but please do so without resorting to school playing field tactics.

You are Guilty...

...of creating "Forumism" by suggesting that the childish play is all on SB, your warning should be posted on all sites as well. It is not so much the forum as the users. Some folk hop around that much it is difficult to imagine what type of craft they have, and others are accepted universally on every thread, ccscott for example. (more through sympathy I expect:)) )

Re: You are Guilty...

but technically colin has a foot in both camps being a ragpot owner

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'you're making a scene'.

Re: You are Guilty...

Agree there
Although englander does have a funny motion that made me feel sick the next day. My other half rather naively put it down to the six bottles of white wine colin and i had with lunch followed by 2 bottles of red later we had. but in my heart of hearts i know it was the offending motion.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'you're making a scene'.

Catch 22 (modern version)

"Nobody should make childish posts in a forum. But asking not to do so, is childish in itself."

Sorry Kim, nothing against your viewpoint, but did you wonder around any other forum on the net lately?
Overall, in any YBW forum (including scuttlebutt) the "usefulness/childishness" ratio is fairly higher (=better) than the average, if you see what I mean.

Besides, personal fights are much more likely to happen between people who don't know each other, as is normally the case in large internet communities. BTW, I have the impression that the number of members is growing by the minute. Is there any accessible statistic about that?

Cheers, Mario.

I agree, am thankful for that and also know that where two or more are gathered you are not so much going to get a church service, more likely a diocesan dust-up /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Am also aware of a number of bulletin boards across the internet covering all sorts of subjects; some of them frankly we couldn't and wouldn't run. The balance here is mostly due to the users themselves and it is to their credit that I am not having to moan every five minutes.

You are right to suppose that more people are visiting than ever before. Total site traffic is conservatively measured at around 80,000-125,000 unique IPs per month, depending upon the month; across the year we have in excess of 500,000 IPs and growing. Registered forum users have grown from 300 when we started registrations last year, to nearly 7,000 now with the increase not slowing.
