Sorry if I haven't be paying attention, but when exactly will cruising yachts be unable to stop in Weymouth?

The olympic sailing dates are: Saturday 28 July - Saturday 11 August 2012

The paralympic dates are: Friday 31 August - Wednesday 5 September 2012

What happens inbetween-times?

Thx Vic

From the website:

The Ports of Weymouth and Portland will be open for business throughout the Olympic period and visitors arriving by boat can be assured of a once in a lifetime experience... however, all berths between 16 July – 12 August must be pre-booked.

So, what happens after the 12th August? Normal service resumes? Can one just rock up, be allocated a berth either in Portland or Weymouth, and pay normal prices?

Curious. Seems that even if I wanted to stump up the cash to anchor (rather than avoiding the olympics like ebola as I had planned to do) I wouldn't qualify. Under "restrictions for vessels at anchor" in the "information pack":

* Tenders should be at least 2.8m and have an engine of at least 4hp

My puny 2.6m tender and 2.5hp outboard are sadly not of sufficiently olympian proportions....

Getting there...

Just spoken to Weymouth HM: after the 12th all restrictions on entering and using Weymouth will be lifted, but the security restrictions for Portland will remain in place (or resume?) for the Paralympics.

To enter Portland one will need to obtain a security sticker at least 24hrs in advance.

As I understand it...

And from Portland HM:

Portland marina will remain locked down for the whole period from the main olympics through to the paralympics, but the harbour (bouys or anchorages) will be available for use by visiting yachts overnight, but must be vacated by 0800hrs.

As I understand it..

Thx Vic

It says :

Outside of the main Olympic Games period (26 July - 12 August 2012) standard prices apply:
Vessels up to 19.9m £2.40
Vessels 20m and over Prices available on request

Id not Just "rock up" though at least until the paralympics are over without a phone call or a call on VHF Ch12

For the prices they are charging - forever as far as my boat is concerned.

Many Wayfarers always used to always compete in Falmouth week. one year all the accommodation doubled their prices due to an ecllipse. Wayfarers as a class have never been back!

As I look out of my window it's open now (Sunday) with quite a few visitors in. As long as you phone in advance and pre-book you'll be fine and prices haven't gone up yet.

Astonishingly (or, perhaps not, given the prices they are after), I got a letter in the post from Weymouth only a week or so ago saying they still had places available and would I like to take up a "special offer" during the Olympics. Can't remember if it was for a marina berth, a mooring or simply anchoring.

Actually, no, I wouldn't. I don't think it is right to ask me to pay to drop my anchor in a bay that isn't even protected by any bit of harbour infrastructure and I'm certainly not paying inflated prices for any other sort of berth.

And just what proportion of yachts/MoBos have tenders of 2.8m AND OBs of 4hp or more? I don't.

Anyone else get that letter? (Sorry if this has already been posted).

Well don't come to Weymouth then .... it's quite simple.
The tender size and OB size were determined by the the safe requirements for those at anchor......the requirement for a holding tank you didn't mention but is presumable self explanatory?
If you don't want to pay for anchoring in a bay unprotected by any kind of infrastructure then you're ruling yourself out of some very pleasant French anchorages.
