Over the years I have put together bits of kit from ebay to keep my old wheel pilot going. As a result I have a mixture of a 4000 head unit and a ST4000mk2 drive unit. Now the head has given up the ghost and only steers one way, even manually. Perhaps I could get it repaired but this is also an opportunity for an upgrade if I can do it at a reasonable cost. On ebay I can see st4000+ head units but I suspect you also need a fluxgate compass to go with them. The old 4000 had it built in so I don't have one. I have also seen fluxgate compasses on ebay such as the Raymarine M81190 so my question is if I was to buy a new head such as the Raytheon st40000+ Pilot display would this compass connect to it ok and are there other compasses which would also connect to it?

Steve, I tried something similar but couldn't get the ST4000 parts to work in me shed never mind fitting to the boat. In the end I sold the parts and bought a new Evo 100 system which is several generations on from the ST4000. The decision came down to the fact do I want to have an old system fail in rough weather at sea. The Evo system does very little work sailing along in cruising mode and means I can do other things like put the kettle on.

You might find the parts individually on e bay or bit the bullet, Hudson Marine on the Hamble are always competitive.

As far as I know, all the analogue Raymarine compasses are compatible. The new pilots use an integrated attitude and heading reference sensor that connects directly to SeatalkNG, that will not be compatible with your older system.
