I have a fully functioning Autohelm 3000 wheelpilot, belt driven type. I am looking at connecting the Autohelm 3000 controller to a Raymarine ST4000 type drive unit. Reason: Neater system, easier to engage/disengage. Has anybody done this? I have tried the Raymarine online query service, without response. Any advice welcome.

The ST4000 is a substantially heaver motor so you may burn out the output tansistors, particularly if it is a 4000+ motor. Are you really going to save enough to be worth it? Compleat 4000 systems will be going cheap at the moment as they are now old stock replaced by the S1

I too tried the Raymarine online query service and no reply was forthcoming!
My query was to control an octopus cable drive unit MSR-40 with the ST 4000+ control head. The motor in question in this unit ins an RS735 made in (guess where) China, but is widely used in models and robotics about 6A or 60 watts. I must find out where these robot wars people hang out as I'm sure all the guff about Pulse Width Modulation control of DC motors is to be found in this area!I'll have another go at the Raymarine folk in the meantime!

The ST 4000+ motor is tiny, scalextrix -like once removed from the black metal tube. These motors seem reliable and long lasting, it is the little mixed nylon and brass wheels inside that fail and, tip out as breadcrumbs (when the dreadful screech is heard as you come off that big wave!)Possibly the belt slip of the earlier types with external belts has in the past saved the units from destruction and maybe those who have stuck to the earlier types have more reliability.Of course the algorithms have improved, but not the ability to clutch slip when overloaded.

I have a 4000 control head driving a 3000 motor, because the early 4000 motors fell apart. Just about to change to a 4000+ motor (reasonably priced at about £330) but will keep the 3000 as a spare. Can't see any reason why a 3000 head should not drive a 4000 motor, although don't think it has all the interface functions.

Thanks all. Got a response from Raymarine also. They say no compatibiloity issues, maybe minor performance issues, nothing major. Sorry, wont be selling the old drive unit just yet.
