But where to get them in yacht sizes I have no idea.

Both work on the water pressure sensed at a 'diaphragm' and convert it to speeed, have to be set for depth and pressure patterns aroun hull but reliable and easy to use. Make sure you retract them before berthing or anchoring.

There is the echopilot log, which works well, I have one, but Byron's quite right, the GPS log readings are very good, since SA has been taken off.
 
Am I misunderstanding the question or even the answers.

Is it not the case that GPS will give you your speed over the ground but
not your speed through the water?
 
Yes! Duke, one gets the 'true' speed rather than the 'water' speed. However I was referring more the the Log aspect of the Garmin. The 126 & 126 both retain distance travelled and other useful info.
Martin... if you are reading this and you want a nice toy and considering your plans, what about a nice expensive forward looking echo sounder ? ;-) You can buy me a Garmin 2010 as a present for giving you the idea.

Now I'm getting mad. I've been told - by ALL you lot, that a FLES is a waste of space unless travelling slower than 3 knots. Even then the results it shows aree far too late and you get pranged anyway. This was all in reference to a post I made over 8 months ago 'bout echopilot gold and silver.
 
I never told you that, I've had no trouble with mine over three knots, its worked fine, the only trouble I had, was I couldn't read the screen in daylight, thats now been solved with the new screens, they also have a new sounder head, so maybe something was wrong in certain instalations. If it doesn't work over three knots, you would here people screaming at the boat show, me for one!

Ok, I has had a little (or lot) of whiskey when I sent my last post re: Foward looking echo sounder. So I surrender.

Maybe it wasn't ALL of you that put me off but it was many responses that I got. I distinctly remember 'cause I even went as far as looking at the at the LBS which is why I posted on the forum for info.

I can't refer back to it 'cause it was in the days of the other forum.

ps Byron, you'll have to do MUCH better than this to get a 2010 off me!
 
Do these give log of distance thro water or just over ground ?
 
My sailing cruiser which was a Southampton boat show exhibit in 1979 had a Doppler log fitted for that show. It has since been replaced by a Cetrek paddle wheel log,which can be calibrated.Obviuosly mechanical logs can be affected by weed,mud etc but generally clear themselves quite quickly.I think simplicity in any instrument is a valuable asset. GPS over the ground speed should be regarded as an extra,but as in other posts on these forums is not as important really as speed through the water.
