This Weekend another of my long awaited "To Do's" have been ticked off. PRV had a phone call at 9AM Saturday and was at Poole Harbour by 11.15 to accompany me on "Fortuna" our Leisure23SL to sail off to Weymouth.
A quick report...
Before even leaving Poole Pete noticed the Genoa wasn't quite right, what happened was, I had unfurled before tensioning the halyard (I slacken it off when I moor up) and the swivel had slid down making a bit of a mess of things up top. So sheets taken off, everything untangled, and off we set again. We didn't get past the chain ferry till 12.15, which really was too late, but we plodded on anyway.
We knew there was a Westerly forecast, ie right on the nose when were to round St Albans, so had to chose either inside passage and motorsail or outside passage and sail. With only another 3-4 hours of fair tide, we chose the inside passage, but crikey was that choppy! and it didn't really start to calm down till we got past Lulworth.
Once inside Weymouth Bay, the engine started being strange but we eventually rafted up at about 7-15, by 7-30 we're in the pub ordering rump steak. We then met Fergus and his crew for a game of Bowls before retiring to our bunks.
6.30am found an all night Macdonalds for Brecky, then cast off at about 7.15 for the trip back, again this was probably too lateas we only had about 3 hours of fair tide, but, it would be slack going around St Albans, unfortunately rushing the wrong way past Durleston and a light head wind, so it was back to motoring again.
All in all, for me a very succesful weekend, albeit a bit messy on the sailing, but never the less I felt a sense of acheivement.
Many Thanks to Pete for joining me, and Fergus for his ever encouraging words.

A pic of us rafted up, thats us on the outside with the fart vent open, and approaching St Albans yesterday morning

excellent, its a cracking bit of coast to sail along. I've always found Anvil Point a bit lumpy as well

One day I WILL make it to Poole!

I think Colin's agitating for next year's Small Boat (formerly Novice) Cruise to be to Swanage, so you may get further than that :)

Cheers to Colin (and Fergus et al) for an enjoyable unexpected outing!

Pete

Colhel, Phil, Fergus and all, thanks for posting that ray of sunshine !

Incidentally, I have had my boat pooped twice; once seriously in heavy weather, the other time when I was being too casual off Anvil Point in a force 2, when the overfalls lazily lapped over the transom and knobbled my prize radio.

I hope we all meet next season on a cruise to Poole ( inc South Deep ) including Wareham, if we possibly have time it's a magical trip up the Frome.

One time when I was going along there with a novice crew, a 1960's 'Aquacar' with two blokes wearing Top Hats and Tails came around the bend going the other way; I tried telling Brian this was completely standard but I think he saw through me. :)

Indeed. Just don't know what thread title to give it. A cruise for small boats, but we need bigger boats for parties

:)

Good times, I like posts like this they are encouraging to us beginners :)

One day I WILL make it to Poole!

There is no such place as Poole, the world stops at Hurst and you know it ;)

Well done guys, one day I hope to make it beyond the Solent :)

I don't know, YBW implies we'll let that mobo lot come along :D to be fair then we could have a real party with no crouching, cold drinks and a spacious interior.

Nothing wrong with the mobo lot. In our marina some have BBQ's and its rumored even hot tubs on the fly deck. I don't get invited to the parties but thats more to do with my looks and figure :) let alone my sparking personallity.

and as for Poole / Hurst, "ohh me back" made me feel 76 not 46 - a very sad weekend from my point of view.

Live magic has a BBQ and cockpit drains. Two bottles of wine and we can cork off the drains and fill her with water for a hot tub. Now I just need the bikini girls and I'm set.

Bikini girls don't go for small yachts you say? :(

St. Albans is a pussy cat even in fairly strong weather if you stay close enough to shore - close enough to toss a tea biscuit without straining your arm. This passage is no problem really if you keep well out side Anvil Point and - especially - Peveril Ledge, which caught me out once but never again. . .

If you don't want to go all the way, there is a loverly anchorage at Chapman's Pool if the wind direction serves. . . Just beyond St. Albans. . .

I think to have claimed to have "done" Weymouth then one should have enjoyed dinner at Mallams.......http://www.mallamsrestaurant.co.uk/!

Looks more upmarket than on a previous trip to Weymouth when to support sustainable fishing ( see I do care about the envirnonment) we had a makeral bap as advocated by Hugh Fearnley whatisname and when the girl at the take away offered tatare sauce just stuck the plastic satchet with the fish in the bread! An aquired taste!!

Mackeral al la plastique! Trez Bon, Bon appetite!

It was more the charming customer service: I hadnt realised there were different counters and tills for eating in and out, didn`t want the smell in the cabin but thought we would sit on the quayside so paid the takeout price, then it pissed with rain so asked the girl if we could eat in afterall, told in no uncertain terms NO and to take my tartare sauce with me, such a charming young lady, I am sure she went down a treat with the olympic visitors!

The Chapman`s pool anchorage gets the lulworth range safety very excited because if west bound they are convinced you are going to "enter the template" and rush to shoo you away just as you nip into the anchorage!

You were offered a cosy berth, in a quiet creek, alongside a (slightly) bigger boat with a fridge and full drinking headroom but oh no you had to go swanning off to the fleshpots. :D

Well done. Cherbourg next year?
