Fairly easy to beat the 17kn in a twin trapeze asymetric dinghy! You soon appreciate how sensitive the rudder is at that speed though!
And before any of you ask how I know what the speed was ... I have a HH GPS ...
Mind you - you stop quite quickly when the bow disappears into the large wave infront!!

With the tiller in one hand and the main sheet in the other

What do you hold the GPS with?

Mind is boggling

[/ QUOTE ]Naw, Naw - Tiller lashed, Main sheet cleated off, cup of coffee in one hand leaving the other free for the GPS or other activities. To keep one's self seated one has to clench one's cheeks tightly thereby gripping the seat.

I was racing on a maxi in Seattle - we were heading for the leeward mark with the spinnaker up and the wind kept building - the crew (18 of us on board) let out a big cheer when we hit 15 knots - bigger cheer when we hit 16 - smaller cheer when we hit 17 and the wind had built to 35 knots with the mark approaching VERY fast. No cheer at all when, at 17.8 knots and 39 knots of wind, the skipper said "Get that *%ç&ing kite down NOW!"

Same boat 10 months later we hit 22 knots in the Molokai channel at the end of the Vic-Maui race. Again with the kite up in over 35 knots of wind, but with sunshine, T-shirts, shorts, and some Mai Tais less than an hour away, it was much less stressful.

18.5 kts. Mount Gay 30, W Solent, 1 reef in the main, 1.5oz Asym Spinnaker and 40 kts true up the bum. The eventual wipeout was spectacular!!
