thieves have raided riverside boatyard Balloch and stolen 15 propellers worth between "£5000 and £10000 "each according to the Evening Times today apparently the "brass " propellers may have been stolen to order"

How many propellers are now at risk from being nicked and just think of the look on their faces when they find out the props are not brass and worth little or nothing as scrap after the effort required to remove them

If they can get 15 probs off in a quick raid someone should employ them for their services.

It's easy if you don't care about being able to use the prop or the shaft again - just take a Li-ion angle-grinder to it.

I assume the idiot journo has taken an estimate of the total and mistaken it for the individual value.

Hmmm I never considered prop theft. Mine is a huge 4 bladed Variprop. Maybe I should take it home with me from now one!

A few years ago when I went to a marina near me on a Sunday afternoon the gates were closed needing a swipe card to get in.
My boat is now at that marina and it appears that they have relaxed their security as the gates are open all the time.
One result of this is that the 10 skips which are there for boat owners refuse are being topped up by people with white vans emptying building rubbish into them. Also people from the local village walk in on a dog walk.
Obviously the owners of the marina have never lived in Liverpool or Manchester.
Why is it that it is only after something happens that security is improved.

In Portishead which is arguably quite safe, I actually got locked in the yard yesterday when working on the boat. They work like clockwork to lock down their facilities. Good for security but then it did mean doing a commando crawl under a 6 inch gap beneath the fence!

If you can crawl under the fence then the rest of their security seems somewhat pointless!

No gates at all on our yard in Southampton and I don't worry overmuch about theft. It is important that all ladders are securely locked to the cradles - a boat stood on its keel with the slippery topsides curving out above your head is actually pretty impregnable to the casual opportunist without one.
