Whilst I appreciate not everyone uses/likes Facebook, East Cowes Marina are using it to give regular updates on whats going on in the marina, showing photos of the boats and giving general reassurance they are all safe and sound. I'm finding it quite confronting, especially in this weather. Well done to all at ECM.

I've had a couple of calls. Once as someone was on the boat (fitting the new canopy) so they called to make sure I was aware and another as the seagulls were pecking at the CD's I'd put across the rails to scare them orf, doh! It is however a mate who works for MDL though so I am getting special treatment I guess. Seen the pics of spotty in the snow, she's looking good buddy:cool:.

HP keep us informed if there's any issue and we would only have to make a call if we wanted them to check on anything. Great service.

And in answer to the thread, SFA. I'm only there because it's convenient to home - the council employees there don't seem to have grasped the concept of this customer service mullarkey.

The guys in the yard I use are very friendly I really couldn't ask more of them however the parent co are not boaty orientated so its an uphill struggle to get any improvements out of them.

Hopefully after recent events they are going to improve security. Not that it was much worse than other yards but at least they are now getting quotes for improvements.. time will tell

just been to check on my boat and warm her up for the night and i was very suprised they had NOT gritted the main pontoons they have gritted the ramp due to the steepness i suppose, but would it have cost them an arm and a leg to grit the main pontoon as it was as slippy as hell and a accident waiting to happen

also we ran out of water and the taps are frozen solid not the marinas fault i may add so cant get water now till it thaws out a bit, good thing is at least the pipes on my boat cant freeze as i have ran them dry and left taps open.

boat was toasty warm with the eberspacher on though and i think we were the only people on out pontoon last night must be mad LOL

I'm a fan of MDL marinas (where I used to be moored) because almost all their staff have a great attitude. But they dont clear the snow or grit the pontoons just stick up a "pontoon closed" sign. Am I supposed to swim to the boat?
Ocean quay is a cable from shamrock quay and half the price. But a 2 ft gap down the middle of the pontoons was cleared and gritted.
And I moved from MDL after years of (snow policy aside) always great and often outstanding service simply because they are just too expensive. Sometimes whatever they do isn't enough.

sorry for the slight thread drift but it is that time of year with renewals looming. are you on a finger or standard pontoon? just looking at the tarrifs and the deep water berths are a similar price to OV for our size of boat but the standard pontoons and moreso, the finger pontoons are low enough in price to spark an interest. Presume going on one of the finger berths has its downside other than draft constraints?

You'd have thought someone would invent a gadget to suck up the salty marina water and spray it on the pontoons to defrost.

you don't need a deep water berth for a mobo, any of them will be fine.
I have restricted access - £250/metre. It's awkward to get into which doesn't bother me at all and only impossible at LWS. I'm always afloat.

you lose freedom berthing and fuel at cost which is not an insignificant benefit of MDL.

freedom berthing is a consideration I'd say but I think the fuel berth up the river on the Itchen is pretty comparable to fuel prices after MDL discount as is the fuel berth over in Cowes. I'd need to do alot of overnighters at other marinas to notice the effect of loss of freedom berthing. I guess the only other consideration I can think of is proximty to the footy ground on game days (avoid) and I don't think Ocean Quay is close to the restaurants and bars.

football is a PITA, just travel when the match is on and it's fine
For us it's a place to park the boat.
For a weekend, even if we "don't go anywhere", we nip to the Hamble. If I stay on the boat in the week withour Mrs E there's a decent pub close by and Oxford st is less than 15 mins walk. if it's raining southampton taxis are as cheap as chips.
