What\'s your limits...??

Have been thinking (dangerous i know!) about peoples limitations when contemplating a hop over the pond to see our wonderful French Neighbors.

Obviously not a day where Neptune isn't happy, but was thinking why many others port hop around the Solent and never look further afield.

What boat was your first crossing in?

For me the cut off was always twin diesels! Nothing less.

Albin 25 one single diesel across to Calais on a come day, loved it !

Need to do long trips before you cross the channel but its worth doing !

Done it with every boat that i owned, Now the famly wants to see the west country ! they are bored with going abroad every summer.

LOL

Re: What\'s your limits...??

First crossing Searay Sundancer 270, twin 4.3 petrols !

Lymington to Cherbourg for the first time. Magical.

Coming back, can't remember if it was from Guernsey, but had to refuel in Poole bay from spare cans......................never repeated that little stunt !

All part of my first MBM cruise - and very enjoyable it was too.

Chaparral 205SSE with 4.3l petrol. Went Hamble-Poole-Alderney-Guernsey-Cherbourg-Cowes-Hamble. Great fun, great adventure. Stopped mid channel to get rope off outdrive and took a swim...

Re: What\'s your limits...??

Ahh my very first boat was a Chaparral 19 feet I think.

Kept it dry stack at Poole Boat Park.

But - learnt ancoring in Studland, and it doesn't work throwing the anchor over the guradrail, then onto the cleat, and leaving the boat while visiting the beach.

What happens is, for those new to boating ! - you get a "V" in the guardrail. Part exchanged for the Searay, with the "V" as it was ....................

Whoops, Fred Drift .......sorry

Re: What\'s your limits...??

Planning to do it this year in our new boat - Fairline 43/45 (MarkCs old boat!)

Thought about it several times with our previous boat - Aquastar 28, but always came to the same conclusion - boat would do it, but crew would not enjoy it! 8 - 10 kts would have made it a rather long and uncomfortable trip!

Re: What\'s your limits...??

Hardy 27 with single 100hp Volvo - all the way to Jersey.

Part of an MBM cruise many, many years ago.

We set off at 4am from Lymington in company with another slow boat and the the rest of the fleet zoomed past us about midday.

Flat seas and glorious sunshine all the way

There was an MBM reception committee waiting for us at Corbiere at 8 o clock that evening when we arrived knackered by absolutely joyeous at having made it.

No autopilot, no radar, no experience /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I would think twice about doing it now under the same circumstances.

Re: What\'s your limits...??

twins, but thats just the way it went rather than deliberate.
Got to say, while its pleasant being abroad, the crossing bores me rigid. I'd much rather be heading along the westward coast, admiring its changes and beauty, than staring at nothing mid channel.
