What\'s your ideal boat?

I thought I had my ideal boat but my family (of 4) want me to change my Contessa 32 for someting with better accommodation. Anybody got any suggestions in the 34 to 36 foot range?

Oh dear - have you considered ditching the family ? What a wonderful boat - and yes, I know our Rival 41 shares the same storage and space issues. But don't give up - argue !

Much as I am often tempted, ditching the family is not really on. I looked over a Rival 41 recently and loved what I saw, unfortunately I need to keep some money back to keep all my radiators going.

Would really need to know how big your family are, and what sort of money you want to spend. + How much your wife enjoys the sailing?

Contessa is a lovely sea boat, are you looking for something with the same sort of performance, but larger accomodation?

Victoria 34 comes to mind, but it is a bit open plan so may not suit, but has a performance very similar to the contessa (have raced with both).

Will you be going for the option of anodized purple mast and boom like the one at SIBS, or are you not fussy as ling as it's an oyster

Anything by Jongert / Van Dam / Nordia / Trintella.

For rufty tufty Land Rover type cruising: a Garcia.

Re: What\'s your ideal boat?

Yup, defo the purple spars, and maybe even some underwater UV lighting and a big sub in the binnacle!

To be perfectly honest I'd always hated the oysters, the only ones I'd ever seen in the water were the little ones (50 foot) and they looked chubby, rather like an american teenager. I'd seen the bottom half of bigger ones at the london boat show (can't get near the top unless you wear a blazer) and they too looked a little porky for someone with a racing background like myself.

But then I met the skipper of a 70 foot one in the canaries and went aboard for a drink. It looked seriously sleek! And then in the BVI's I was shown round one by the mate, and I was kind of sold. :(

Pity there's no chance in hell that I could ever afford one!

Re: What\'s your ideal boat?

The Victoria 34 has crossed my mind, it has a similar underwater shape to the Contessa. I haven't been on board one though. The Rustler 36 is another possibility but maybe would cost too much. The big issue is really lack of headroom in the Contessa and its coffin sized quater berth.

The Nystery is a nice looking boat, classic lines, 3/4 rig and all that, but the accommodation doesn't look all that generous. I want my cake and eat it.

Re: What\'s your ideal boat?

What do you particularly like about your Contessa? And what do you need to change?

We've got a Centurion, which is very similar, but it is beginning to feel a bit small (or to be more accurate, a bit lacking in storage space) so we have begun wondering what we would get if we were to replace it.

At one point I was wondering about the Rustler, but decided that I didn't want a long keeler. Current other possibilities would include HRs, Oyster Heritage 37, Sadler 34, Hunter Mystery...
