What\'s your boat\'s name

Ok its not really that simple,

What would you have liked to call your boat/yacht if it were not for you having a better half or daughter / kids that would take exception to calling her after your first love or such.

We are having a family crisis at the moment, wife want's Charlotte II, daughter wants 'Nemo' (she is four going on twenty) and I want 'Mannanin' (Manx Sea God).

Could be I will be sleeping on board for the weekend if we don't reach agreement soon.

Re: What\'s your boat\'s name

Not quite been in your position as I have not bought a boat new. Always kept the name of the boat when bought, which could mean I'm superspicious? However, my current boat I bought in a poor state and had it totallly rebuilt . I did not want to keep the previous name (Natasha Of Burnham) as I sail in Devon from the Exe. My family were helpful in suggesting many many different names but I still had the niggling superstitious doubt's.
You've probably guessed that Ashanta is an anagram of Natasha and I feel that this way I haven't really taken the name away from her?????
Regards.

Re: What\'s your boat\'s name

Always bought used boats and always kept the names! not really because I think there is bad luck in changing the name, its more because each boat I have owned has had its name sign written on in paint and it would be a hassle getting it off without leaving a mess and a shadow of its former name!

However our current boat has the name "PHILAE" and when my wife and I saw this we said to each other like the boat but that name has got to go! Then we were told by the then owner that the name was an ancient egyptian princess. We decided to seach the internet to see what we could find! its not a princess but........

Well what a surprise we got! just try typing in the name of our boat in any search engine!

After that we decided to keep her name!

Good luck with your choice of name, but remember one day you will sell the boat!

Regards Barry

In my dreams . and hoping not to hack off SWMBO, boat should be named after all the ex girlfriends/wives, so would have to be called :

"Toomanytocount"

I'm very fond of bond girl boat names some examples of which might be:

Pussy Galore
Onatopp
Miss Goodthighs (one of my faves)
Holly Goodhead
Molly Warmflesh
Honey Ryder (very cool and my personal fave)

"Charmano?"

Our boat is called "Substitute" because:-

a) It was called Valiant Sunbeam which I thought a bit pretentious for an 18 foot cruiser
b) I sold a car I'd been building for a year because I'd made it too quick for the roads around here - it was lethal - (or maybe it was my driving) so the boat was just that, a subsitute. But having said that I get much more pleasure from the boat.

Superstition doesn't come into it, I couldn't live with a boat with a daft name.

Re: What\'s your boat\'s name

When I bought my Chris Craft from the states I bought it blind and it was called:

The Other Woman

When I traded that in for my new boat, part of the deal with my lovely lady wife was that if I blow all our hard earnt cash on a new boat she gets to name it. A bit dodgy, but she came up trumps and the boat is called

Re: What\'s your boat\'s name

On the point of nautical superstitions, over here if you see a red haired woman on the quayside you should never go to sea that day for fear of bad luck. Was talking to an Irish Lady on the Pontoon the other day (red haired), went out for a couple of hours, losts two fenders, scratched the rear canopy window with the boat hook and reversed my new(ish) Volvo XC90 into a pole in the car park smashing the rear lights.

Hmmmm, makes you think!

Keep it short!! If you're ever sending a Mayday you'll be under water before you get the name of the boat out let alone your position. KISS!

Perhaps it's Irish Ladies that are unlucky. Or perhaps you are unlucky.

I wasn't going to say anything about Volvoists, but someone else has.

Re: What\'s your boat\'s name

Kinda left myslef open for that one, however, in my defense the flappy openy bit at the bottom of the light pole had been bent open by some vandal so I could'nt see it sticking out, well that's my excuse.

Used to be a hooligan on a motor bike (TL1000R with all the racey bits)so quite aware of the 'Volvo' tag, never thought I 'd end up with one but have to admit against everything I looked at it was the better car.

Re: What\'s your boat\'s name

A while back i was welcomed aboard a boat with one of those old school skipper type people...the stories i was told!

He mentioned that changing a name of a boat isn't such a taboo subject as people think. He mentioned that if you change a name on a sailing boat you must 'sail' backwards for the length of the boat (or only half if it is a rather large one) This is meant to symbolise the erasing of the old name.
On a power boat its much different, once you have run aground/touched bottom (unintentionally) three times then the new name is welcomed onto the ship.

I changed the name of my boat when i brought it just over 5 years ago. It was my first boat and had the name ZARK painted on it. Sure as hell not going to 'live with it' after spending my hard earned cash on it! I changed this to Dazed & Confused as found it more appropriate at the time. Who knows, maybe it still is...!?
