Does anyone know exactly what is wrong with the cruise ship Aurora ? I am fascinated but none of the web news sites report the nature of the fault just the cost of coping with it – anyone know ?

The rumours are that...

The Aurora features diesel-electric propulsion, with two 20 megawatt electric motors! Rumours are that they're having to replace the starboard electric motor, which supposedly weighs 180 tons. This apparently involves cutting a hole in the hull. Can't be a quick job!

There's an interesting pdf file on the Aurora's propulsion system here.

If you can believe South BBC News, yes they are having to cut a hole in the bottom of the ship in order to replace a primary propulsion motor.

Today\'s news:

" The Aurora, operated by P&O Cruises, is undergoing repairs at Lloyd Werft’s yard at Bremerhaven and the work is being combined with a refit, originally scheduled for later in the year.

"A spokesman for Sam Electronics, which supplied the Aurora’sstarboard propulsion motor, said earlier this month that the motor’s failure was linked to insulation coils supplied by a subcontractor which failed to dampen vibration at higher speeds.

"The Aurora is expected to resume service on April 22 with a two-day cruise to Belgium, followed by a 17-day round trip from Southampton taking in destinations like Majorca"
