hope this attachement works...... first time trying attachments, etc

I have just got a Beneteau 32s5 (late 80s). Before then, it had been sitting in a boatyard for about 7 years without being touched. I am working my way through it trying to get it ready before the summer is over.

Anyone any idea what this black plastic box with a metal panel attached is? It was sitting beside the log & sounder up in the front cabin, everything covered in what smelt like very rancid cooking oil.
There are the initials 'XM' on the plastic - presumably 'xm yachts', but no idea what it does, if it even is related to the log, etc

One other thing...... there is a round black plastic thru hull - just that - nothing else, with just a screw on plastic lid ! I thought all thru hulls should have a definite puspose, and be made of more than plastic.

Any assistance would be gratefully accepted......... this may be the first request of many ! i havent even looked at the engine yet - havnt got round to scraping what looks like white crusty corrosion all over it

Cheers

Bernard

Damn, too late :)

FYI, the cooking oil has probably escaped from the depth transducer, in the white tube to the left of your first photo. It may not work until you top it up.

It looks to me that you have (left to right) (1) an in-hull echo-sounder transducer, (2) a thru-hull log, (3) a thru-hull log fitting without the log transducer and with the blanking cap in place, (4) the remains of glue from a previous in-hull echo sounder oil bath. I guess that the latter two relate to kit that was replaced (or moved to the new position) for some reason.

I think if were me I'd like to remove the redundant thru-hull and do a proper GRP covering of the hole, but until I ever got round to that would wish to have a spare blanking plug and a suitable sized tapered wooden bung immediately to hand and preferably each on a bit of cord next to the fitting (so it can't be lost in the bilge, or whatever, at a critical moment), just in case.

The smell was foul, until i got it cleaned . I think any sort of oil will work, wont it? I think the other circular imprint was maybe a pervious attempt at mounting the transducer

It does seem a bit odd having a spare hole like that? You are right, am going to seal it up. Or at the very least, reinforce it with a good bit of epoxy and glass tape. It looks a bit flimsy.
I have also bought a couple of small tubs of 'stay afloat' gungy, waxy staff to place strategically around the various seacocks, etc

Mine contains castor oil. I think that does not go rancid like other vegetable oils can. I dont think I,d use a mineral oil although any liquid that is non corrosive, and does not evaporate, freeeze or smell would do equally well

I am trying to figure out why your attempts to post pictures from Photobucket haven't worked

I think if you uncheck the "link back to albums" option in your Photobucket settings and then copy and paste the IMG code it'll work
