'Ang on! You can't call that a trip! A trip means you actually left to go somewhere! Just sitting on the boat trying to start an engine while still tied up does not count as a trip in my book. We've all done that at some time or another I'll vouch!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Mine would probably be from one side of the Hamble to the other. Why? Because I wanted to get to the other side! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But perhaps the best was on a yacht. A friend of mine won a days sailing at a school auction and SWMBO and I went as it was for four people. The boat was based in Chichester Harbour and on exiting Chi it seemed to take a long time to go anywhere - after about 3 hours I casually remarked, did we not come out of there some time ago? Yes, said the owner but I got the tide wrong!! Thought so thought I, too polite to tell him what I really thought. So in 3 hours we did about 2nm's. Put me of sailing really!!

I've since had some better experiences on yachts, but that was probably the shortest real trip!! Spending 3 hours getting nowhere, while actually going somewhere! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Moving from one pontoon, where we were the outside of 4 rafted, in St Peter Port to another pontoon at 5 am because someone on the inside wanted to leave. Great start to the day!

Mooring to landing stage and back (about 1 cable round trip) to load mattresses onto the boat at the beginning of last season. Forgot to bring them down to the yard before she went back in the water. Ooops /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

The shortest trip that never was...

My supposed short trip around Porthmadog estuary last season, recknoned without one thing...

I was to take "Concrete John" and his mate Joe for a spin in a motor-boat, coz they're yotties ya see.

Anyway, I know John (who is a wonderful chap) has got vast amounts of experience, so I let him have the helm. We weren't meant to go far and we had aimed at 15 minutes or so coz the weather was crap. Really crap - F6 SW, rain, high seas with white caps etc.

Err, no. John took a shine to CI and off we went. Up & down the waves - up and down, side to side and John just kept on going. Took me out past the reef and showed me all the markers and bouys and stuff. Came through the sound by St Tudwals and the waves just heaped up higher. But John was loving it and funnily enough so was I...travelling at 8-10 knots or so. "Great sea boat, this Dave!"

Anyway, I taught John how to run with the swells and surf down 'em on our route home, which was made bloody miles from land. Truth be known, he has a natural knack for boats.

Finally arrived back in port 3 hours later. Just a quick spin eh?

Re: The shortest trip that never was...

How about 2 feet. Trying to leave the pontoon with a stiff breeze blowing me back on, attempt number one ended up with the boat back against the side about 2 feet displaced from starting point, and the skipper (cough) trying to make it look as if that's what was intended...

shortest trip was from my very public marina to just round the corner to escape all the knowing eyes, problem was those that had walked past (serious members of the gossip club) having averted their eyes from some hot gossip i.e. I had a FELLA on board my boat, as we set off, they all met us round the supposed quiet corner trying to moor up, all those eyes then were extremely knowing.

gosh that was fun, and unfortunately very obvious /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Leave mooring and go across to the river wall (20 feet). Tie up and go to the pub. Fall into the cockpit at closing time and go to bed.

From Tuckton bridge to central christchurch, during which time no bladed impellor overheated engine and melted rubber exhaust connection -300 yards

Arrived in central christchurch with much noise, smoke, fumes and traumatised crew hurredly moored up near the bandstand to allow crew and engine to cool. When a member of the public approached through the steam / smoke and said " I say old chap are you the ferry".

My response - priceless!!!
