Well, to start with, you can keep going at silly speed in conditions where all of us mere mortals would slow down...!

 
Scenario - "I got this, hold my beer" says the skipper.
The chap in the foreground of the video is still holding the skipper's Heineken...... or maybe it is the Mate's beer - he / she would have been on the foredeck.
They might have just got away with it if they didn't have that mooring platform on the starboard bow lowered.
And I was very pleased to read in one of the articles about this incident that the bridge operator (who was in that wee cabin moments moments before) managed to jump out just in time.

Although it is a very tight squeeze through that bridge at the best of times, even for smaller vessels.
I think that this entrance to the lagoon was widened about 20 years ago and a new bridge built in an effort to try to accommodate the larger yachts - and it is again 'too small' now........ (or rather the yachts trying to enter are too big).

There's a video interview with the Captain online too somewhere. He lost drive, did what he could, dragged anchors etc and was praised for the way he tried to avoid the accident.
 
Word on the street is he won’t be a skipper much longer. The bridge is 17m wide and Ectasea under 12m beam Hmmm. It’s not “tight” but with rocks to one side there is a tendency to not line up properly. The rest of the boat had lotsa clearance .., but he sat down in the wind and poked it up to save the stern port quarter cos not lined up... with that platform down dang. This was last Sunday..
