Well for me it has to be 35-40 foot. I only want one other aboard most of the time. The thort of a crew is aborant. Not about how much mony availabe. About where one can visit easily, sneak into places. Putting up with guests for lengthy periods?? No 35-40 ft will go just about any where with two of a crew. Deal with most weather and hook itself into a little corner at the other end whilst still delivering a good degrea of comfort. I can think of good reasons for having smaller, Money being the only one. Exept a dinghy of course which is alot of fun. But whats the reason for bigger??

I reckon 45ft is the optimum, provided its twin with a bow thruster and therefore simple to handle with just me an' 'er.
Have had a forty footer for past five years and its fine for the two of us and occassional guests, but the grandchildren are growing.........

I'm also somewhat anti-social and enjoy occassional single handing. Also guests and crew are OK for a short while - but we do like our peace and quiet.

Agree 35-40 about ideal for me preferrably fly. If staying aboard with guests regularly then aft cabin two heads handy. One competent crew is enough also as hlb says.

I presume you're talking about the sea?

The minimum generally recommended for handling sea conditions is 35' although mine being a shortie doesn't qualify there.

Really the best one is one that can be handled by one person, because everytime guests come aboard I have to revert to "left and right" instead of "port and starboard."

And, if anyone out there is in a very generous mood, I'd like a Nelson 38 please.

We now have a Sealine F43 and we are really happy with the size, never had an issue with marinas, the aft cabin is perfect for when we have guests, and the dinnett is ideal for 3 childen to sleep whilst believing they are camping..

An added bonus she is also a great sea going boat..

Yes. I'm talking Me and Er. But money no object, would anyone want a paid crew. I could not stand it. Might as well stay in a hotel, which I hate.

Guests occasionally. Mainly just visiting for the evening. Fly Bridge, so it's all weather comfort. Bow thrusters optional for Wusses!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

All this talk about 35-40 footers! If only money was no object!

My 21ft costs half as much to moor and I can take it anywhere in the UK on it's trailer.

Also half the length equates to about 20% of the purchase cost!

well being hlb's ER indoors (not sure I should admit this) we at the moment have two serious boats (though mine is up for sale) but we both agree that you can definately have too big a boat. One that you just wouldn't want to clean, as you just wouldn't know where to start due to the sheer size of it. And would hate a crew, we did a trip on Englander, which was lovely (round Majorca) and one of Colin's crew we would have like to have dumped over the side within days.

Interestingly neither of us particulary likes cleaning the others boat, as it not "our own". Oh well its off to my boat this afternoon to check it out.

I reckon 15m/50ft is the ideal size, big enough to live on board for long periods, small enough to get into virtually every marina and handleable by a couple. Got to have 3 cabins, 2 heads though

you get huge help with a bigger boat, and visitors have more space to chatto each other not always inyerface. In th med, bigger is a bit better, and nicer at anchor. Limit for driveit yerself is 100GRT bout 85 feet but still get crew to clean it. In st tropez, the boat has to be OVER 21.5metres otherwise yer can´t stay in the oldport in summer. Also over 20m can nicley trundle at sailing boats in portsmouth or any little river which is quite good, ish.

Rubish. I went into St tropez in a little knackered dory, just as virgin chalenger and a few mates were comming out. Tutts flew into the air and went straight through the seat on her return!! We had no trouble parking in ST.
