Last week, i done gone and done, two absolutely bloody stupid tings!

First whilst messing around I tied the dinghy up to one of the piles, on a nice loose painter, only to find it trying to climb up the pontoon as the tide came in!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Remnents of the line still attached to said pile after feeverish cutting by myself, first having looked around to make sure no-one saw me!

Then 5 mins later having reassesd the situation, i attached a new painter and left her to swing around in the increasing force 5 - 6................Swing it did, backwards and forwards along the anti fouled chines scratching the engine cover on the brand new outboard! DOH!

Next I Fereccla'd it in the vein hope of removing the scratches, instead I removed yet more paint!

Damn It Butthead!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

something similar when i was on the hamble. decided to do some varnishing on the boat. their was a bit left over so i painted the dinghy paddles.

had this really bright idea that as there was a hole through the pile on the pontoon at the top i could put one paddle each side through the hole to hold them to dry. it never occured to me it was a spring tide and when they were touch dry later the tide would of gone out so i could not reach them /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Stupidest thing i've ever done?

Financially: Bought a boat /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This is easily the dumbest boating thing I've done. I bought my first sea boat, a Sealine 305 flybridge, from what was Quay Marine at Bursleden on the River Hamble. We decided to take our first trip one Easter saturday with a friend of ours and his girlfriend who also brought along her mangy dog which took an instant dislike to me. The trip was meticulously planned to take advantage of the tides and just as the tide turned to ebb, we slipped our mooring and headed down the river to Bursleden bridge. My SWMBO was on the foredeck and she started shouting at me on the flybridge and frantically pointing at the sky but I could'nt hear her above the noise of the engines and in any case what did she know about boating, I thought. I'd read a book on powerboating after all. As we started to pass under Bursleden bridge, SWMBO became ever more frantic and it suddenly dawned on me what she was getting agitated about. We were too high to get under the bridge. I slammed the throttles into reverse but it was too late. The tide slewed the boat sideways and the underside of the bridge wiped the radar and nav light post clean off the radar arch with a horrible cracking noise shortly followed by a huge howl from the cockpit area below. I later learned that the dog had been sitting in the cockpit minding his own business only to find a radar falling out of the sky onto his head which was no joke as it was an old heavy Koden unit. Anyway we returned to the marina to lick our wounds and survey the damage. The dog was hiding under the saloon table and refused to move. My mate's girlfriend was distraught about her stupid dog and I was distraught about my new boat. All in all, not an auspicious start to my seafaring life

Jas ! To numerous to list, it would take all day. The most recent however was dancing up & down a pontoon saturday night with a bunch of Herberts (but it was fun). /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

start a very old avon with a 25hp merc on the back....in gear and full throttle (which obviously I did not know as it had been rigged incorrectly) dumb looking back, deadly at the time

Tied to tight on the bure on the broads not knowing it was tidal woke at 5am dangling at 45 degrees and struggled to untie totally in the buff.

two of us on a cruiser, both jumped off at the same time both without a rope, boat immediately blew over to the other side of the river, no bridges in sight. We had to sit on the grass for another boat to come along & pass us our boat back.

Boat partner's wife wanted to go out on her for the first time - we'd only had her a week.
Yours truly did the engine checks, incl. raw water strainer, closed the engine compartment hatch and my "oppo" set off downstream.

After about 3 mins. engineroom alarm went off and strange smell started.
CLANG!!!! Dawned on me that I'd been distracted earlier and probably hadn't put strainer cap back on. I opened the hatch amid clouds of steam and spray, so turned off the engine and started bailing sharpish.

Unfortunately, in jest, I also shouted (whispered loudly), "don't panic, don't panic, we're sinking !!".

Partner's wife thought I was serious - went decidedly pale.

Many years ago I had boost charged my batteries as they were very flat and tried to start the engine with the battery booster on. There was a massive explosion as the venting hydrogen gas was ignited by a spark. The battery was in little pieces and all around me in the marina people's heads popped up to see what had happened. I came out of my wheelhouse and looked around as if to see where the noise had come from and no-one ever found out what had happened.
For some time after that I kept finding bits of battery in the bilges.

Went down to the boat a few years ago on my own.
Wanted the dinghy off the back so decided to move her along the pontoon a few feet myself.
No problem - I thought.
I even had wireless controls for the thrusters.
So with everything undone I pushed her forwards and then tried to pull her bow in - it was stuck.
Simple - I thought - I'll give the bow thruster a good squirt - nothing.
So I gave her a huge pull and a squirt from the thruster.

Suddenly there was a pop and she came free.

Yep - I'd forgotton the yellow rope!!!!

Many years ago I dutifully dipped the oil on a diesel hire cruiser and decided to top it up - with Petrol! I picked up the wrong can /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif No damage though, realised straight away and got them to change the oil before we'd ran the engine - lucky escape.
