What\'s the difference?

Besides the price, what is the difference between Lacquer Thinners and Mineral Turpentine?

Re: What\'s the difference?

Thanks.

Was just wondering about cleaning brushes after doing some varnishing.

Re: What\'s the difference?

Use the recommended thinners for the varnish, which, if it's a conventional single pack product are probably white spirit. Turpentine substitute, which is keosene based, would be an alternative. Thing to do is to repeat several times with fresh solvent shaking as much as possible out between each rinse.

Personally I like to use a brush cleaner, such as Polyclens, which is then washed out with water, after removing the bulk with thinners. I also usually wash thoroughly with washing up liquid!

I dont suppose many people will agree esp. with the washing up liquid!

Re: What\'s the difference?

Clean paintbrushes???
Make paintbrushes that have been used clean again???
Being a total lazy slob I just chuck em and get new ones. Costs less than cleany stuff anyway.
Doing the big boat this week, only used 1 brush so far for priming rudders, P brackets, etc but will undercoat tomorrow. Then we will see some serious paintbrush attrition.
How is it that despite wearing gloves for painting today, I've still got the flippin stuff everywhere. I do know that using thinners to clean paint out of the cuts sustained scraping barnacles can almost bring tears and definitely bad language.
May your varnish be smooth!

Re: What\'s the difference?

I agree with the washing-up fluid entirely. Massage the neat fluid right up to the ferrule well before rinsing with warm water.

Re: What\'s the difference?

The difference between using a really good quality brush, say a synthetic Purdey @ 20 quid has to be seen-and with varnish that is what it is all about, unfortunately !

Stingo, personally overnight I just hang em in water, and at the job end clean and wrap up or keep in one of these Brushmate
Unfortunately not much varnishing going on in the UK just now
