Whats the difference between Volvo MD2020 A/B/C/D

are these all fresh water cooled?

what is the lettering difference?

Are they all shaft drive?

the lettering changed with time

All fresh water cooled. all avaiable with shaft or sail drive.

Main changes that I can recall were to the electrics and instrumentation

The A version did not have the transmission insulated from the engine so had an nearly fully isolated electrical system with an earthing relay for starting and preheating. From the B version onward the transmission was insulated so had a normal electrical system that used the block as the negative return

Important if you have one of these engines that you understand the significane ofthe isolated transmission vs the isolated electrical system.

The transmission types fitted changed at some point too.

I think you will be able to find all four versions of the owners manual on VP's website ( I seem to have all four !) which will give some clues as to the differences as will the parts catalogues

Thats interesting. I have 2004 2030D. There is a resistance between my pear anode and the shaft. The rear of the engine bell housing has a 'do not ground stcicker' attached, but the anode wire goes to the front side of this. I think I need to move it (the wire not the label!).

My 2030D has a Hurth gearbox.
