What\'s the chances of that?

Spent Good Friday fitting a VHF with DSC to my 22footer, also fitted an aerial and also wired up my gps to talk to the VHF.

Didn't realise a an aerial and mounting bracket could cost so much???

Spent hours figuring out where to place the aerial for practicality and aesthetic looks. Took ages trying to fathom the rather agricultural fitting of the aerial terminal and had to search on PBO but there was a couple of useful hints posted there from Cscott that got me up and running. The had fun drilling holes through the boat whilst it was rocking around on the pontoon.

Then fathomed the power and data wiring for the GPS and VHF and the very technical sounding NMEA link which is just a simple single data out serial line to the VHF.

Powered up the VHF and the GPS and B****R me it all worked first time. What's the chances of that? Radio check with marina gives 5.

I am still waiting for my VHF licence and MMSID from the Radio Agency before I can use. Anyone know how long it takes for them to issue, I've been waiting at least a week???

Re: What\'s the chances of that?

thort you had to have the MMSID programmed into the VHF at the swindlery. Doesn't that mean you'll have to take it all out again once you get the number?

Although my NASA 35 will 'unplug' it is possible to set the MMSID after installed according to the manual, although it does state you only get one crack at it otherwise you have to return the unit to the dealer as you say to be reset.

Re: 50-50

well then, that's what will happen. then they will keep it for yonks, then the thing won't work on return, and just as it does work a big wave will catch you on your way to somewhere with no water so it will go salty. Worst of all, you will never ever need to put in a distress call and any portable equivalents will soon cost 100 quid and your dearest swmbo will buy one for christmas, thereby rendering all that work worse than useless cos it actually makes the boat look dated as if it had Decca.

sorry.

Re: RA MMSI#

Mine took about 2-3 weeks. And yes, it can be programmed into the radio - though, as you say, only once. So it's worth inputting the figs in decent light!

TCM Did I say welcome back earlier???

Yes you just know its going to happen. The manufacturer gives you one shot to get it right entering the MMSID and of course I am gonna cock it up cos the manual probably doesn't tell you in excplicit detail how to enter and accept the code. I will then be forced to rip it out and send back to Compass coz my local swindlery was charging forty quid more than compass and when I told them they said that I won't get any aftersales service from Compass (and swindlery man knowing full well that the one shot MMSID will mean at least one return trip to said supplier and grins sweetly).

Or on the other hand MMSID goes in sweetly and Wakeup uses his DSC device to pick up the distress signal from a beautiful lone female sailor. HMCG praises Wakeup for the rescue and gets a mention in the Queens New Years Honours list. The Rescued sailor then vows to committ the rest of her life to wake ups every whim and satisfaction. A good £200 quids worth of investmnet I reckon.

Learner has probably gota spreadsheet to show the likely hood of either of these events and probably some more obscure ones. When is he gonna buy a boat????

Would Happy have a suitable lone female stranded sailor in his cuddy, just in case, do you think?

Along with the personal rescue helicopter!

Are we allowed to talk about happy even though he is off air at the moment???

Seems a litte in appropriate as he can't defend himself then again I don't think he could if he were here.

'Delusions of preparedness' springs to mind....

Re: Along with the personal rescue helicopter!

I am sure that Happy is well prepared against unwarrnted personal attack. He will almost certainly have a special pepper spray for close quarter physical work, a large self-containeed hosepipe water jet to beat off marauding crowds and the Penguin Book of One-liners in several languages ready for the non-stick and non- stone brigade.

Word has it that he's not been banned at all, just taken a few days off to go to Baghdad and pick up a few suitably sized cannons to mount on his new boat to ward off unwelcome company...................................................................... ;-)

beautiful bag, and big - very big
however the race between happy getting the inflator out of the bag and BarryH pumping up his tender the hard way was won by........Barry /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: inflators....

it was barry pumping v happy getting the pump out of it's bag - not a fair contest really.
I have no doubt that when set up and connected happy's pump would win hands down - obviously a serious bit of kit

Re: inflators....

no that's not what I said - read it again if you got that message/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
other factors of course might be relevant - happy was drinking a beer whist trying to get the thingy out of it's bag whilst barry needed (and got) a beer once he had finished pumping.

Re: inflators....

Not only do you have to factor in the time to get it out of the bag, but you also have to allow time to erect a safety barrier and move all bystanders behind it, put on your ear defenders, safety boots, safety gloves and goggles, set out the fire extinguishers, brief the designated first aider and wait for the lifeboat crew to arrive...

Barry, OTOH, just pumps it up and goes. "Take two trailers of safety gear to the boat? No, I just pump and go..."
